First, do no harm. – Reverence Farms

For two weeks now, I've been unable to write the weekly farm newsletter telling you what's going on and what we have on sale. Peddling goods, even virtuous ones, was something that I just couldn't make myself do. So I wrote this instead. Please share your thoughts, and let's have an honest conversation. If I missed the mark, let me know. Let us all rise together. ~Suzanne

First, do no harm. It’s the hippocratic oath, and it’s also the underling organizational principle of civil society. Fifteen years ago, I decided to largely check out of civilized society and learn to raise my own food because I no longer believed that chipping away at the structural inequitie...

For all those Fido's missing their raw A2A2 100% grassfed pet milk, we have more in stock this week. A few heifers have freshened (had babies and thus started making milk), and so we are well stocked. Come by the farm store on Hwy 87 (Tu-Sat 11-2) or order online.

Need a bunk feeder? We are selling 10 of them, in good condition, for $100 each. They retail for $130+tax at Southern States. All funds will be donated to Rural Advancement Foundation International-USA, which does amazing work for black farmers in our area to advance local food systems, ancestral knowledge transfer and access to working capital. The folks at RAFI-USA are amazing folks, and they have been doing the day-in-day-out work of making food systems more equitable for a long, long time. We used these bunk feeders when we fed a non-grain energy supplement in the field to keep our animals in good condition while we worked to improve their genetics as well as our pastures. (We drug them by hand from pasture to pasture...) They were an integral part of our budding grass farm, but we no longer need them. RAFI provided 50% of their farmer grants in 2018 to farmers of color, and put $100,000 into black-owned farms. (We are able to sequester rain water off our dairy barn into underground cisterns to use for washing the parlor because of a RAFI grant.) Please PM if you'd like to purchase a bunk feeder or feeders. Pickup will be Saturday at 11a.

Real food doesn’t scale quickly – Reverence Farms

We are in a bit of a conundrum with our raw pet milk. We don't have enough for the floods of folks now wanting it. And so we are working on a fair solution, that respects our long-time customers and also relieves the burden on our staff of answering requests to put milk aside. In the meantime, I decided it was time to "come out" about why we make so little milk, why every bit of milk is precious and how milk fits into the larger ecological context of a diversified farm. It's a window into our cow souls, and who we are as a farm. Please read it and share your thoughts. ~Suzanne

NY strip steaks and ground turkey are both $2/off per pound, starting today and running through Friday. Our beef is 100% grassfed the right way, meaning that we give our cows a fresh salad bar every day, and we harvest when the animals are fat on grass. Our turkeys are fed a locally milled, certified organic whole food ration from Reedy Fork Organic Farm, in addition to their 2-3 times weekly pasture moves. #thisisfood

Take a walk along the farm.

Take a walk along the farm.

Take a walk! The farm is located in Saxapahaw, with a mile of trail river frontage along the Haw River. You walk down from the Rivermill complex and take a left on the trail for a 3-mile roundtrip walk, most of which is on the farm. As soon as you hit the first metal bridge (thank you Mac Jordan and Doug Williams for the vision and followthrough for these awesome bridges and to the Haw River Trail partnership for maintaining the trail), you are on the farm. The second metal bridge crosses from what we call the "HR" (Haw River) side of the farm, over Hobby Creek, to the "AQ" (Austin Quarter Rd) side of the farm. Once you cross over the wood bridge, you are off the farm (and that marks your turnaround point for a 3-mile walk). Very often times you can see the animals from the trail.

Ground beef $3/off per pound when you buy in bulk! Our remote freezers have been off-limits to us since Covid started, and when we were finally able to get back into them yesterday we found an avalanche of boxes, and the 1# packages of ground beef weren't accessible. So we are selling you the 5# packages we used to use in the restaurant. We believe that everyone should be able to buy wholesale if you buy in wholesale quantities. Stock up while supplies last.

Baby Pea has Baby Peat! Welcome to the world, little fella.

Cows are mothers before they are givers of milk. Baby Pea is a first-calf heifer who had a little bull calf tonight, who Nathan named Peat.

"The rule to be observed in this stable at all times, toward the cattle, young and old, is that of patience and kindness. Cattle are not reasoning beings. Remember that this is the Home of Mothers. Treat each cow as a Mother should be treated. The giving of milk is a function of Motherhood"

Thank you all for reaching out and asking how we fared in the tornado, which clipped the edge of the farm and seems to have traveled up an open field next to our pastures. We were totally spared! The tornado seems to have taken a sharp east turn right as it hit the lower pastures by the river. It missed the farm store by 1/4 mile! The farm is on Austin Quarter Rd (shown in photo), and the yellow line is covering a yellow mark on the radar map that appears to be where all the debris was flying around, which is right where the farm is. All the animals and people are safe, and other than having some trees down and having to fire up the generator on that side of the farm for the well, all is well. We are thankful for God's protection and blessing. Thank you for all of you who have let us know you were praying for the farm. We are grateful.

How’s everybody on the Farm - y’all okay? Suzanne Nelson?!
Happy and proud to have been there at the beginning. Thank you! Ken Traynham
To all of you with the most respect intended, please tell all of us including your favorite patrons what is going on. All we saw is a website change, and then when you look at your page it says you’re in our barbecue place. I personally ever since I came to the Syria every restaurant has barbecue, coleslaw, hush puppies. And those places I walk out. I am looking for culinary treats.
There is nothing I do not recommend. Excellent food, service and atmosphere!
Had the best Cobb salad with chicken last night...and enjoyed the music, Slow Down for Poetry . Great service, all smiles!!! Yall need to go!!!!!! 👍
Dear Reverence Farms proprietor: Earlier this evening, I had what was quite possibly the worst dining experience of my life at your establishment. I dined alone and was completely ignored by your wait staff the entire time I was there. I couldn’t even get a glass of ice water when I was dying of thirst. Your wait staff gave more attention to their iPhones than their patrons. They socialized behind the front counter, laughed and giggled as opposed to actually working. I ordered your Classic burger medium rare and received a burger that was completely uncooked in the center. Due to the fact not a single one of your waitresses came near my table, I wasn’t able to send the burger back. Nor was I able to order another item off the menu. Eventually, I gave up on ever speaking with a waitress and finished my meal. Then, I sat and waited for another 15 minutes for someone to ask if I was ready to settle the bill. It never happened and it wasn’t going to happen. By that time, one of your waitresses had dropped everything to spend time with her child. So I went to the counter to pay. The young lady at the counter did not even have the courtesy to ask me if I was satisfied with my meal, but rather asked me if I would round up for a local charity. I agreed to round up because the local nonprofit should not be penalized because of lousy service at your restaurant. This is my third time dining at your restaurant and the service has grown worse and worse with each visit. It will definitely be my last. Perhaps you should consider elevating your hiring standards and employ people who actually know how to work for a living and then supervise them closely to maintain quality control. Food for thought.
Please bring the cornbread back🙏🏽🙏🏽
Just read the bridge is completed and Old Greensboro Road from Jones Ferry Road in Carrboro is now open!
Today, as usual, the local craft group came by and dined. I had the special-fried chicken sandwich-and swapped the honey mustard for the chipotle mayo. I really hope this becomes a part of the rotation in the specials. It was fabulous!
Any specials going on for Mother's Day tomorrow?
From Chapel Hill on Old Greensboro Hwy to Hwy 57, is it blocked because of a bridge repair?
