Freedom Volunteer Fire Department will be hosting a fundraiser in support of the Wilderness Walk for Warriors. The day’s events will begin with a morning hike followed by a chicken barbeque. Anyone wishing to participate in the morning hike is more than welcome to join us for a smal donation. After the hike, the Freedom Volunteer Fire department will be serving a chicken barbeque dinner at the Fr
eedom Fire House. The menu will include barbeque chicken, potato or macaroni salad, a roll, and a drink. Members of the Wilderness Walk for Warriors will make a small presentation to promote their endeavor and answer questions on how to help support their cause. The Wilderness Walk for Warriors is a fundraising effort by a small group of patriots who wish to give back to our veteran neighbors that have proudly served and protected our country. The hikers will traverse the 100 Mile Wilderness section of the Appalachian Trail. Departing on July 18th, their trek will take them 114 miles to the peak of Mount Katahdin, ending on July 26th. In addition to raising funds for area veterans, the hikers will be participating in the Summit Project. Each hiker will carry a memorial stone bearing the name of a Maine service member who has made the ultimate sacrifice. The hikers will carry this stone throughout the entire trek, all the way to the summit of Maine’s highest peak. All of the funds raised from this selfless endeavor will benefit veterans’ programs right here in Maine. For more information about this project, check them out at Facebook.com/WildernessWalkforWarriors. All proceeds from the hike and the barbeque will be donated the Wilderness Walk for Warriors. To advance purchase a meal ticket or to sign up for the morning hike contact Jeff Bishop at 322-1888, [email protected] , or any member of the Freedom Volunteer Fire Department.
