I've sat down to write this no less than a dozen times and had to stop because the tears blurred my vision to the point I couldn't type.
Madison & Co. Cafe closed its doors for the last time this past Friday.
Why?
I know many of you reading this are asking that question.
The answer is simple and complicated all at once.
It may shock some of you to know that I have never taken a paycheck from this restaurant. Madison & Co. was never intended to make a profit. It's intention was to give back to this wonderful community - which it has!
We have fed the area homeless MANY meals.
We have been a safe refuge for people needing to get away from life for a few moments.
We have donated to each and every non-profit and charity fundraiser that has walked through those doors.
We've been the place parents with toddlers could meet for lunch & not worry about making their children sit still at the table.
We've been a free, hot meal for many families going through hard times.
We've been the place where the lonely widow/widower could come and have conversation & human interaction.
I had grand plans to expand the cafe and continue on its mission, but it seems as though the perfect storms in both my personal and professional life have come together to form a super cell I can not battle back from this time.
All along the way we have fought equipment issues (and product loss resulting from those), break-in attempts, natural disasters across the globe forcing rising costs and subpar produce, trade tariffs increasing costs, sky high utility bills, flooding (we're on E College by Saline - that literally comes with this territory), and power outages.
I am NOT saying any of this to garner sympathy, but to let you all know the honest truth- after the latest restaurant related issue that forced us to stay closed this week, I have come to the place of understanding that I do not have the strength or resources left to battle back at this time.
I am hopeful that, given some time, and after the birth of Ms Jolene, we will be returning to once again serve our community & enjoy all of your lovely faces again.
I will miss you all dearly in the interim.
All my love,
-Kimi
