We are so thrilled to introduce Gabrielle Gilliam, Soprano, who will be working with FWO this season as a Lesley Resident Artist! Praised for her “beautifully resonant vocal quality” (Texas Classical), Dallas-based Gilliam will make her mainstage debut for The Dallas Opera in 2021 as The Heavenly Voice in Verdi’s ‘Don Carlo.’ She will also make her debut in the Tulsa Opera Filstrup Resident Artist Program as Amore in Gluck’s ‘Orfeo ed Euridice’ in 2021. She has performed extensively with The Dallas Opera, Fort Worth Opera, Opera North, UNT Opera Theatre, and the Amalfi Coast Music & Arts Festival in Salerno, Italy. Gilliam is currently in her third year as an Outreach Artist at The Dallas Opera.

A woman of many talents, Gilliam has also been involved in filmmaking. Take a look at her masterful short film, “Handel: Furie Terribili & Eternal Source,” a story about anger and the ability of friendship to free us from anger by Lumedia Musicworks: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z47jowG2O6k

Gilliam studied with Dr. Carol Wilson and received an M. M. and B. M. in Vocal Performance from the University of North Texas. In addition to her performance schedule, she is active in education. Gilliam is a voice faculty member at the prestigious arts magnet, Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts Arts and teaches private voice lessons in the Dallas metropolitan area. During her free time, she loves being outdoors, traveling, improving her body and mind, and cooking vegetarian cuisine.

Our new General Director, Afton Battle, had her first real opera experience right here in North Texas. Read the interview to find out how she got involved in singing, and about the opera that moved her to change her career!

“I was so moved by the piece, by the emotional, physical, visceral reaction of being in a theater and experiencing an orchestra and the sets and the actors and the emotion,” she said. “It changed the trajectory of my life after that.”

This week we wind back the clock to our 2011 Festival and director David Lefkowich's glorious production of Verdi's fiery classic. Soprano Marjorie Owens and tenor Dongwon Shin starred as doomed lovers caught up in a tangled web of passion, deceit, and dark family secrets.
