It all started with our annual Christmas tradition: making Christmas cutout cookies with mom using a recipe my grandmother clipped out of The Fort Worth Star-Telegram back in the early 1950s!
During my pregnancy with my son, Blake, I was put on complete bed rest and my family had to babysit me and tend to my daily needs. I was passed around to any and every available family member. I felt a lot like a child instead of having a child, but it was nice that my family pitched in to keep us safe and my blood pressure low.
The holidays were fast approaching and my grandmother, who we all call Honey, set up a cookie decorating day for me to help get me in the Christmas spirit and have a fun day with our family.
I have always loved to explore my creative side and have used art as a way to relax. Since I had all the time in the world to work on these cookies, I decided to be as creative as I could with these little cookies. So, I requested a few toothpicks to help me be a little more detailed instead of just slathering icing on the cookies with a butter knife. I had so much fun and I received a lot of compliments on my very mediocre work and it made me wonder if there was more to this cookie thing.
