☕ We’re Alright - S2E30

Humphrey found it fortuitous Jitter was feeling better. He needed a favor.

When Jitter wandered up for his daily drink, Humphrey leaned over and whispered, “Think you can sneak back after lights out? Got a little project.”

“Anything for you, Old Man,” Jitter answered immediately.

The detective agency was thriving. Flick was off presenting her latest work to the police department. Freebie was polishing the brass apple bell above the café door despite having polished it last week. Some habits die hard.

Pelli arrived with Ace, both took a stool near Humphrey. “Morning, gentlemen,” Humphrey greeted cautiously.

Ace leaned in, “Humph, I figured something out.”

“Yeah?”

“All those questions I've been asking... about being new and fitting in?”

Humphrey nodded.

“My mom has a boyfriend.”

The room got quiet.

Ace shrugged. “I don't really like it. But I wanted you to know why I kept asking stuff.”

Then he smiled.

“And I wanted you to know I like you. Thanks for being my friend.”

The adults felt that one.

Suddenly a whole season of questions made sense.

Later that night, after close, Jitter slipped back into the café. “Alright, Old Man. What's the project?”

Humphrey grinned. “Remember Presley?”

“Sure.”

“Well, turns out he knew exactly why I was leaking.” From a package beneath the counter Humphrey produced a small replacement part. “Need help installing it.”

The two worked quietly while the café slept. By the time they finished, the tray was gone. The leak was too.

The next morning the crew noticed immediately. No tray. No drip. Just a beaming Humphrey.

Freebie brought out pastries and everyone's favorite drinks. He looked around the room at his friends: At Flick finding confidence. At Jitter finding balance. At Ace growing up. At Humphrey finally settling in.

Then he smiled. “Things are going to change. They always do.”

The room listened. “But if you stay steady... and you take care of each other... you'll be alright.”

Nobody had anything to add. Because they knew he was right.

☕ Reinspection Day - S2E29

Freebie arrived early that morning, as coffee shop owners tend to do.

His friends were already waiting outside. He knew why. It was reinspection day.
While he'd never have asked them to come in early, he was grateful they had.

No one felt that weight more than Humphrey. He'd been steaming, descaling, polishing, and generally worrying since before sunrise.

As the crew filed into the café, each offered their own version of encouragement.
Jitter patted his side. “Don’t even think about it.” Pelli adjusted his cap. Inspector's picky. You got this.” Flick dogmatically noted,. “Well, Humphrey, you do have a leak. It's contained.” She was still learning how to say less while meaning more.

Solomon hummed softly from atop the boiler. “A diamond with a flaw is worth more than a pebble without imperfections.”

Finally Freebie stepped over and rested a hand on Humphrey's side. “We got this, old man,” he said. “You're not going anywhere.”

They all meant well. Still, every comment reminded Humphrey why they were here.

The morning passed in a blur of wiping already-clean tables, polishing already-clean cups, and sweeping already-swept floors.

Then the inspector arrived. He looked. He checked. He scribbled. He left. The report sat ominously on the counter.

PASSED.

That was it. No speech. No drama. No fanfare. Just a single word. The room exploded anyway.

Everyone immediately acted like they knew it would happen.
“No big deal.” “Told you.” “Obviously.”

Humphrey pretended not to enjoy that. Failed completely.

Later, Ace came flying through the door after finishing breakfast and chores. He ran straight to Humphrey. “How'd it go? Did he like you this time?”

Humphrey let out a soft puff of steam. “Yeah kid. All's fine.” And for the first time, he realized something. The pass mattered. But not as much as he'd thought.
These people had decided he belonged long before the inspector ever showed up.

As the day wound down, everything felt right. Then Humphrey received his first piece of mail.

☕ What's In My Cup?

Today's coffee: Whiskey Barrel Aged Single Origin.

And I have to be honest...

It's not for me.

One thing I promise in these reviews is that I'll tell you what I really think. If I love a coffee, I'll say so. If I don't, I'll say that too.

When I first opened the bag, I immediately noticed the aroma. Smoky. Different. It reminded me of the lingering scent of a campfire the next morning.

But the real mystery started after I brewed it.

Most mornings I take my coffee down to my favorite breakfast spot. The staff there is used to me showing up with whatever coffee I'm currently evaluating. On this particular morning, I kept taking sips and thinking, "What is that flavor?"

Not bad.

Just unfamiliar.

I spent half of breakfast trying to put words to it.

Finally, while talking with the manager, it clicked.

The finish reminded me of the smell of fruit beginning to ferment. There was a thicker sweetness to it, mixed with that smoky character from the barrel aging. The two together created a flavor profile I don't normally encounter in coffee.

Now before the whiskey-barrel-aged fans come after me, let me be clear: this isn't bad coffee. It's just different. In fact, if you enjoy smoky notes, sweeter finishes, and coffees that push beyond traditional flavor profiles, you may absolutely love it.

Me? I tend to like my coffee to taste more like... coffee.

That's one of the things I enjoy most about coffee. There isn't a right answer. There are only preferences.

If you're still discovering yours, that's exactly why we created our sample packs. Three collections, six coffees each, about four cups per sample.

More than 50 coffees. Free shipping. No guessing.

☕ A Little Better - S2E28

Things had largely returned to their familiar rhythm around Free the Bean.

Not boring. Comforting. Homey.

Humphrey cruised along. He and Ace had grown especially close these past weeks. Jitter continued to improve. The reinspection nagged in the back of everyone’s mind, but life had resumed its usual pattern.

When Jitter came through the door that morning, a little of his old bounce had returned. His eyes were brighter. The dark circles had faded. He shuffled over to Humphrey and accepted what had become his daily morning drink.

“I want to thank you, old man,” Jitter said sincerely. “I really need to remember to take care of me too. I get excited. I see a problem and I jump in. Then I forget I have limits.” He held up the steaming cup. “Your secret grandmama’s smelly forest brew has helped a lot.”

Humphrey immediately tried to look unimpressed. His gauges spun. Steam puffed. Something rattled loose inside. “Ah, it was nothing,” he grumbled. “Stuff was laying around anyway.”

“However you want to explain it,” Jitter smiled, “I appreciate you.” As he headed toward his booth, he gave Humphrey a quick polish on the side.

Humphrey tried not to enjoy that: failed. He sat taller in his carriage. Pulled his shots a little creamier. It seemed he leaked a little less, though nobody could prove it.

From atop the boiler, Solomon smiled and offered a Desmond Tutu inspired thought. “Do your little bit of good where you are; it's those little bits of good put together that overwhelm the world.”

Pelli nodded, eyes twinking.

Jitter finished his drink and looked across the room at Humphrey, who had done exactly that.

Flick smiled as she closed the folder on her latest contribution to the police department. Even though she had ONLY edited it twice.

Ace’s newly discovered curveball was all the talk of the playground.

Freebie took it all in. If you looked closely, and Solomon did, you might have noticed a tear of gratitude.. Things weren't perfect. But they were getting better. And sometimes, that's enough.
