Let's see those chicken coops in the city! This coop belongs to Greg Baumgart, which is the first inspected & licensed coop in the city following the passing of the poultry ordinance. It's so awesome folks can now raise their own hens in the city!

Thank you to everyone who worked very hard to get the Chicken-Keeping ordinance passed! Our permit/license states that we are No. 5! We are enjoying our chickens; cannot wait for the laying to begin!

So - last night the City Council took up the fees for the new Poultry Keeping Ordinance. As you may have seen on the news last night, I offered an amendment to reduce it from an annual $40 fee to a first time $40 fee and $0 every year after unless major changes (location) occurred. The amendment failed, so the City portion, the license itself, is $40 annual.

I heard and believe that that amount, plus the $50 annual health inspection will make it too costly for some people to do. That worries me. I think if we find that that is hindering a lot of folks, that City Council is open to looking at it again in Nov and finding a way to reduce it.

The issue is that each year city staff sends out a notice to the neighbors, and the license is an annual license, so the time involved is covered by the $40. The conversation was, well, maybe we should change how we are doing the license, in the actual ordinance, and the need for notice to neighbors. Those are changes we should look at to reduce the price. The other thing is that maybe we need to take a comprehensive look at how we do fees and licenses in the city. Right now they are flat no matter what your ability to pay. And they always try to recoup costs of work. But maybe we need to look at that... not only for poultry keeping but also for permits for building affordable homes, for seniors or veterans, etc. Longer convo about that.

Either way, we had a lengthy discussion and I was not able to find the votes to amend it down in price.

Appreciate all of you work on helping us get this ordinance passed !

Andrew
Acting President, Eau Claire City Council.

Hi all! We received a message from Pet Food Plus asking if anyone had certain breeds of chicks they would like to see available. Is there any specific breed you have your heart set on for your coop this spring?

Last night at City Council we passed a chicken keeping ordinance for Eau Claire!! You can now keep up to 5 hens! Thank you E-Cluck and supporters of urban chicken keeping! All of the letters, calls, meetings and the petition helped make this happen! And thank you to Natasha Gomez for incredible work, the Health Dept and City Attorney's office for drafting the ordinance... and of course the City Council for passing it! - Andrew Werthmann, Acting-President, City Council
