This is the true story of a nun from Lombardia ( Italy) who landed in New York in 1899 with six sisters, scant cash, and fathomless faith. The story starts in Rome, where she is given the opportunity by the pope to travel to the United States and open an orphanage in New York's district called Five Points, an immigrant slum where dozens of Italian immigrants lived in a room, dying of typhus, tuberculosis, and cholera. The slum was controlled by gangs of orphans roaming the muddy mean streets, and where hospitals refused to treat Italian immigrants as if they were considered pigs and inhuman.

The story of disregard for the poor and the helpless still exists today in our society over 100 years later describing immigrants in general as drug dealers and low-class citizens of the world but the movie chooses to emphasize not the negative of the reality but the positive achievements of one woman who herself should have been dead from tuberculosis much before she had a chance to change the world.

Cabrini is a midbudget historical epic (with no spandex superheroes or franchise characters) that today’s studios would not likely dare to make — but plenty of moviegoers still crave. “They’re gonna see a movie that the Hollywood studios really don’t do anymore,” There are less expensive ones and there’s the Marvel comic book world of really big, big movies.
