After a LOT of talking, praying, and tears (🙋‍♀️), Raymond and I have decided that Neighbors. will take a pause through this last part of our pregnancy and maternity leave. We need to steward our family well, because our family is a ministry, too. We fully intend to return as soon as our lil' fam is ready (did we mention it's a girl?!🎀🥹), and we’ll use this quieter season to prepare for what comes next.

Over all, we want to be obedient to what God is asking of us in this season, even when obedience looks more like resting, trusting, and preparing than doing, which is kinda new and uncomfy for us! 😅 We know He loves our neighbors more than we ever could, and we trust Him to keep caring for them while we step back for a time.

The beautiful thing is, our neighbors have been ready for this pause longer than we have. They were some of the first people we told about the baby. The night Raymond shared the news downtown, everyone ERUPTED in applause and excitement. Since then, they’ve been taking extra care of me: moving ciggies away, grabbing things before I can carry them, and “friendly scolding” me when I do too much. 😂 For months they’ve been telling us, “We’ll be okay. Take care of you and that baby.” How blessed are we?!

To our volunteers: THANK YOU. You’ve cooked, packed, hauled, prayed, listened, encouraged, and loved people so faithfully. You’ve made this outreach so special, and we already can’t wait to serve alongside you again!!

While direct street outreach pauses, Neighbors. isn’t going dormant. We’ll keep connecting people to resources, maintaining the infrastructure that makes outreach possible, and preparing for our return. Our operational costs continue (especially our heated storage space), so continued support is so incredibly appreciated. 🙏

During this maternity leave, Neighbors. won’t be accepting or coordinating physical donation items. We’d love to see that generosity flow toward other local organizations serving right now. 👉 See, save, and share our Donations + Resources Guide to learn more!

Thank you for loving our neighbors with us, and for loving us so sweetly, too. We are humbled, blessed, and grateful. We thank God for you! 🖤

Can I be so for real with you right now?

In the past two weeks, so much has happened. Our pickup broke down, I am all of a sudden feeling veryyy pregnant, and we’re realizing quickly that all of those who keep saying, “Babies change everything!” are very right. This season has brought a lot of change for our little family and for Neighbors., and we’re still prayerfully figuring out exactly what comes next.

We’re asking God what faithful stewardship looks like right now. It may mean that Neighbors. slows down or pauses for a while. It may also mean that this winter looks very different from the last few. And while I knew that it would be different this year with a maternity leave involved, the actual realization of it is *really* hard for me.

I think God is using this season to work on something in my heart. Because, if I’m honest, some pride and savior complex can sneak into the fear of stepping away. Thoughts like, ‘If I’m not down there, then who will take care of everyone?’ And, like, who exactly do I think I am?! This ministry was never about us being anybody’s savior. They already have One.

God loved these neighbors long before Neighbors. existed. He has cared for them through so many people and organizations. We get to participate in His work. We do not hold it all together.

I’m also beginning to feel like there’s a super personal kindness from God to yours truly in all of this. Because if circumstances hadn’t made us pause, I’m honestly not sure that I would have. I probably would have kept pushing, kept finding a way, kept saying yes, even when our family, finances, bodies, and bandwidth were telling us we couldn’t keep carrying everything this way. Maybe this pause is God helping me put something down that I wasn’t very good at putting down myself, because He’s got it and He wants us to focus on carrying the other things that He has also entrusted us with (a marriage, a baby, work, finances, and a family that needs to be stewarded well, etc.). Like, maybe this season is teaching us that loving our neighbors well also means trusting that God loves them even more than we do. Oof.

So we’re not disappearing, and we certainly haven’t stopped loving our neighbors. We’re just figuring out what obedience looks like in this season. We’re still deciding whether Neighbors. will coordinate a winter supply drive or whether the best way to serve this year is to direct those donations toward other local organizations already equipped to distribute them. As always, we just want to do what honors God and actually serves people well.

For now, would you please pray for wisdom, provision, our neighbors sleeping outside as temperatures fall, all of the organizations continuing to serve them,
and our growing little family? Thank you, friends. We are beyond blessed by you.

By His grace and for His glory. 🖤

After much prayer, conversation, and staring at spreadsheets like they might magically change (they didn’t 😂), we’ve made the really hard decision to postpone the Neighborhood Block Party that was scheduled for this Sunday, September 27th.

We are bummed. Like, SUPER bummed. We had such a beautiful picture in our heads of a messy Neighborhood in Phoenix Park, full of neighbors coming together for food, fellowship, and winter preparation. We still believe in that vision, and we’re excited for it to come together someday!

We try to keep it real around here, so in full transparency, the last few weeks have been A LOT. Between unexpected circumstances, street outreach, coffee biz, mechanical issues, nonprofit life, normal life, and growing an actual human being, we lost traction on the planning and fundraising runway we needed. More concisely, we had too much to do and not enough time to do it.

When we looked at the whole picture, we realized we could probably force the event to happen. But to do that, we’d spend outreach funds, exhaust ourselves, and walk into winter with fewer resources to care for the people Neighbors. exists to serve. That just didn’t feel faithful, wise, or right. People over parties, ya know? Besides, now we have a head start and a lot of lessons learned for the next go-around!

So, the Block Party is postponed, BUT WINTER ISN’T. The need behind the block party’s tagline and mission, “Ready for Winter” hasn’t changed. Our unhoused neighbors still need sleeping bags, blankets, tarps, gloves, warm socks, hand warmers, face coverings, rain gear, and other winter supplies. That’s why we’re pivoting into a Ready for Winter Supply Drive! ❄️

Maybe instead of one big party, the Neighborhood fills the trailer. Maybe churches and businesses host collection bins. Maybe our volunteers eat pizza and pack outreach bags together. However it looks, it’ll still be beautiful. 🙂

We’re disappointed, but we’re not discouraged. Even though it’s really sad and a little embarrassing to postpone, we are choosing to say, “This isn’t the right time and that’s okay.” We’re loosening our grip and trusting that God has it all in His hands (because He does). God has been incredibly faithful through every weird, wonderful, exhausting, life-changing chapter of Neighbors., and we know that even when we mess things up, He doesn’t fail, and He loves every single one of His sons and daughters on the streets, and will ensure that they are cared for.

TLDR: We’re releasing the party. We’re keeping the mission. And we’re getting READY FOR WINTER. 🖤 More details on the supply drive soon, but for now, hang onto your blankets! 😉🙏 Love you all!

We’re out here loving our neighbors. 🏠🖤

Bringing meals, handing out supplies, checking in with familiar faces, and meeting new ones. Sitting and talking, laughing, crying, and praying together. Reminding people that they are seen, known, loved, and worth showing up for. And doing our best to love our neighbors the way Jesus taught us and calls us to.

As summer starts winding down, we’re looking forward to sharing the next season with all of you in new ways!

🍂 Our first Neighborhood Block Party: Ready for Winter is coming up on Sunday, September 27th at Phoenix Park, where we’ll bring the whole Neighborhood together AND start preparing for another Wisconsin winter of street outreach. Everyone is invited!! Spread the word and RSVP here: https://www.zeffy.com/en-US/ticketing/neighborhood-block-party-2

📦 Our Amazon Wishlist is also always open, and every box that shows up at our door becomes something we can put directly into the hands of a neighbor who needs it. We’re starting a new series: KNOW YOUR NEIGHBOR.

There are so many assumptions about homelessness. Some are rooted in misinformation, others in discomfort (hard topics are uncomfy!). We know that people have lots of questions! We also know that those questions can be difficult to ask, so we’re making space for them!

This series will explore common questions about homelessness openly, honestly, and without shame.

First up: “Why don’t they just stay at the shelter?”

It sounds simple, but the reality is a lot more complex. In our community, only 54 shelter beds are available. And even when a bed is open, the shelter may not be accessible or workable for every person or circumstance (think trauma, triggers, medical conditions, mental health, relational issues with other shelter guests or staff, mobility, etc.). There are also organizational barriers at play: shelter-enforced bans, a randomized “lottery” system for bed assignments, limited window of time to be eligible for a ticket, etc. While we are extremely grateful to have an overnight shelter in our area, there are so many more people who need shelter access than there are spots available.

So when the beds are full, the need doesn’t disappear. People facing the night(s) on the streets need food, warmth, hygiene and survival supplies, transportation, safety, help navigating resources, relationship, and hope. Those are the gaps we do our best to fill through the Neighbors. trailer and team.

This series isn’t about making anyone feel bad for asking questions. Quite the opposite! 😊 It’s about ditching stigma, opening dialogue, replacing assumptions with understanding, and remembering that homelessness is a circumstance, not an identity.

Have a question about homelessness you’ve wondered about but never known how to ask? Send it our way. No shame! Let’s talk about it. 🤍🏠🤝

NEIGHBORHOOD BLOCK PARTY — SAVE THE DATE!

On Sunday, September 27th, we’re taking over the Phoenix Park Pavilion in downtown Eau Claire for the very first Neighbors.’ Neighborhood Block Party: Ready for Winter!

Throwing a Block Party has been on our hearts for as long as we can remember, and we want everyone to be there! It’s a chance to bring the Neighborhood together: housed and unhoused neighbors, businesses, churches, volunteers, community organizations, and anyone who believes our city is better when we actually know, love, and show up for one another. 🏘️🥳🤍

It’s gonna be a great time of fun, fellowship, and preparing for the upcoming winter season of street outreach with:
🌭 Food + a good ol’ fashioned neighborhood cookout

🎒 Packing outreach supplies together
