We’ve gotten a few sideways glances about what sits atop this steeple. So I figure I need to share with y’all why that elegant shape of a hexagon has been placed up there!
Hexagons are the foundation of a honeycomb, which honeybees build to store their honey in. The six sided shape is incredibly strong and through its repeating hexagonal geometry, the structure achieves exceptional strength and honeybees can store a tremendous amount of honey and raise their young efficiently while using relatively little wax.
The significance of the honeybee extends far beyond the hive. As bees move from flower to flower collecting nectar and pollen, they unintentionally carry pollen between plants. This enables plants to reproduce and helps produce many of the fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, and other foods that we depend on! As much as we love honey and appreciate it for making our herbal elixirs, the honey bee is participating in a much larger web of relationships that deeply nourishes our lives.
The hexagon reminds us that we are not separate from the living systems that sustain us. Every cell touches other cells. There is no isolated hexagon in a healthy honeycomb. Likewise, our lives are made possible through countless relationships; with plants, pollinators, soil, water, fungi, birds, animals, microorganisms, and one another. We humans can also live in sustainable ways that simultaneously care for and strengthen other ecosystems.
Hexagons appear everywhere in nature and life and contain much cultural significance! The six-sided form offers the most efficient and stable way to cover a surface while using the least amount of space and material and is a powerful symbol, symbolizing how all aspects of life are interconnected. We have a lot to learn from the bees. 🙏🏼
