—————————————————————-

National Deaf Awareness Month is observed every September 1st, tracing its origins back to the World Federation of the Deaf observance established in 1958 as the International Day of the Deaf, which later expanded into a full month-long focus in the 1990s.

History and Timeline

1958: The World Federation of the Deaf launched the first International Day of the Deaf in September.

1980s: The single-day event expanded into the International Week of the Deaf.

1990s: The observance officially broadened into a full month-long recognition (Deaf Awareness Month) in the United States.
