Dearest Coop,

How we've missed you. Not a day goes by that we don't think of you and seek knowledge to enrich your lives in our lively coop.

Today's lesson comes courtesy of a Juneteenth message that misses all the marks. For the record, Juneteenth commemorates the day in 1865 when more than 250,000 enslaved people in Texas were informed that they were legally free—roughly two and a half years after emancipation had already become law.

It is NOT the day slavery ended as Supe Manza asserted. It is the day freedom finally arrived for those who had been denied knowledge of it.

Note that this is the person overseeing all education in Babylon School District, perhaps reviewing HISTORY teachers, and a reminder that they "guided" the student presentation to the board a few months ago on "armed guards" in schools. That gem included cited "research" from a company that supplied... armed guards.

Think of us, and this, the next time a board election comes 'round and you want to ask the "important questions".

In honor of the Centennial Celebration of Babylon Village Hall—a building that has proudly symbolized “service to our community” for 100 years through brick, mortar, and the occasional tolerance of a painted man (aka Austin)—the Village has announced it will be releasing all public records free of charge, with no FOIL requests, fees, delays, or explanations required. Also, all meeting agendas to be published 5 days in advance and meetings to be publicly aired across multiple channels.

Just kidding.

The building may be 100 years old, but the FOIL process remains timeless. As does sitting through a meeting that may or may not be applicable to you or yours- the surprise is in the details that can only be discovered upon in-person attendance.

“Rich history and endurance” to be served with cake and coffee.

The coop is officially back in session.

Tomorrow night’s school board gathering promises enough feathers and fog to keep all of us occupied. First up in the nest: the Grade School Principal is simultaneously slated to receive tenure and have their resignation accepted in the very same meeting. Efficient? Curious?

Meanwhile, the Superintendent is now reportedly engaged to the COO of Suffolk Bus Transportation — yes, the district’s transportation vendor of record and, according to the agenda, donor of a $2,000 contribution to the district. Nothing says “community partnership” quite like an ethical blurred line.

And finally, for those wishing to peck fully, Thursday brings a Meet the Candidates evening for the open school board seats. Come for the civics, stay for the clacking.

THIS is one to watch. The broader message here is about a deep need for continuous communication, on an ongoing basis, to the entire coop about policies, education and a commitment to keeping chicks safe across the district.
