Yes it’s hard, it takes time and patience and sometimes more $$ (most of the time you end up saving money) but cooking homemade, real food is important. The Publix sourdough bread I included- sure, it tastes good, it’s convenient, it’s quick. But real bread should have few ingredients: flour, water, salt & starter. Check the ingredients on store bought sourdough and most of the time it will include yeast additives- which means it’s not really sourdough after all 🤷‍♀️.

Maybe buying from a micro-bakery or pop-up such as myself isn’t convenient, or you don’t like how much we charge. I understand that everyone’s schedule and budget is different. However I do implore your, for the sake of your health and happiness, to learn how to make some of your daily items from scratch!

If there’s ONE tip I want everyone to know when they first start baking sourdough loaves, it’s this: let your loaf cool for at least 4 hours before slicing! 🍞

I know it’s tempting to cut into it right away (trust me 😅), but slicing a loaf immediately, or even within the first 1–3 hours after baking, can leave you with a gummy crumb.

Your bread doesn’t stop “baking” when it comes out of the oven. As it cools, the crumb continues to set and the moisture redistributes throughout the loaf, giving you that beautiful texture you’re aiming for.

Patience really does pay off with sourdough. 🤍

Save this tip for your next bake!

To glove or not to glove is actually a question you will know well if you’ve ever worked in a professional kitchen and received safe food handling training (such as myself).

There are times where gloves are warranted, I will usually wear them if what I’m working with will cling to my nails or skin.

However wearing them makes you less aware of how dirty your hands are, and gives you a false sense of cleanliness. If you wear gloves but go from touching food, to your phone, to your own clothes, to other surfaces…your gloves are immediately dirty.

Usually when I’m baking I like to feel how clean my hands are, and not have a false sense of cleanliness so I will remember to wash my hands after touching my phone or other things.

It’s one of those things that seems contradictory!

I think when you haven’t had professional training, you see bare hands and think, gross, how unhygienic - but I actually see the opposite!
