I’m home following four days at ESTO in Philadelphia, most of them spent in a conference room. That’s the part you won’t see here as conference rooms are famously unphotogenic. But , the people in this industry are consistently curious, generous with what they’ve learned, and always willing to keep the conversation going after the session ends.

What you will see is the rest of it. Philadelphia is one of my favorite cities, so I made a point of getting out into it whenever I could: early mornings before the first meeting and lunch breaks when the schedule allowed. Not a lot of time, but enough to remember why I love this place.

Highlight of the week: a puppy wandered over while I was reading in the park, sat down next to me, and stayed. I came very close to leaving Philadelphia with a dog that wasn’t mine.

One more note: our team was recognized with the All Ways Welcome Award for a project I’m really proud of. More to come there I’m sure!

As an enneagram 7 married to an enneagram 4 with a kiddo who is either a 6 or 9 one of the greatest things we did this year was go back to the same beach hotel for vacation two years in a row. As two passionate experience chasers we are drawn to the novel and the romantic, but our teen is at ease when things are familiar. We decided to take our summer beach vacation to the same place each year once we found our beach and last year we found it! Wrightsville is beautiful and natural and Trailborn Surf & Sound offers plenty of comfort to make it the most relaxed I will be all year. The surrounding area is full of fun things to do (and great coffee) so we were just as happy to return this year as our comfort chasing teen. Incredibly grateful to come home from a week of comfort and ease in the middle of what is certain to be a year of new and novel.

July was spent in the thick of gardening. I taught myself to water bath can and have been doing my best to not waste any of our garden harvest. In July I prioritized more spontaneity and more fun which led to time by the lake, some unplanned roadtrips and remembering the parts of me that have gotten lost over the years. Small joys in July included making a lemon lavender loaf for French toast, sweet notes left on my car and black bear sightings.

One of the gifts that the enneagram has given me is not to put myself in a box. To not limit who I am capable of being. Most of us enter into the conversation around personality from a place of, ‘this is just how I am.” But as you deepen your enneagram practice, you start to see that there is always room to expand. I, at one point, thought wholeheartedly that I would never settle down in a home or a city, but here I am beaming about the roots I am literally planting in the city I grew up in. I am still, in many ways, the same adventurous, impulsive, and exploratory being I’ve always been, but I’ve learned to do it in a way that is more sustainable and more grounded. At the start, the enneagram teaches us so much about who we have been, and who we thought we had to be. But as we learn more, I think the greatest gift is the expansion of who we get to become. All of the versions of ourselves that show up when we no longer have to play the same old role we’ve always played. What is something you do now that you could have never predicted?
