You can’t visit the Columbia Pike Farmers Market on Sundays without stopping by to meet dynamic daughter-mother duo Zelda and Lorraine. If the emerald green banner heralding “Zelda’s NoVa Soul” doesn’t catch your eye, daughter Zelda’s Colgate smile, her mother Lorraine’s winsome banter, and/or the tasty soul food samples will snare you for sure.

So how did Zelda Wallace get her start? The Legend of Zelda (I couldn’t resist) begins with a layoff in 2009. Up until that time, Zelda had worked for 24 years as a television news producer—a job that she loved in part because of all the interesting people it allowed her to meet.

Zelda has since found a new way to use her people skills while doing something else she loves: cooking. These days, she is the culinary creative force behind Zelda’s NoVa Soul.

Zelda’s NoVa Soul fills a glaring void in this area’s farmers markets by offering a menu of ready-to-eat soul food. I call her selections a little piece of home.

Zelda's Specialties (Image: Johnisha M. Levi/Northern Virginia Magazine)
“Zelda’s Specialties,” a menu of about 21 items, change seasonally and are built around produce that she buys from other vendors at local farmers markets. You’ll see soul staples like Hoppin’ John (brown rice, black-eyed peas, and ham) and soul sidekicks (e.g. macaroni & cheese, greens with smoked turkey).

Her best sellers? For salads, the chicken salad and shrimp salad, and for soups, the sweet potato andouille and split pea, are always winners with her customers.

I couldn’t resist the sweet potato andouille soup after tasting one of Lorraine’s samples. Zelda and Lorraine hooked me with the promise of sweet potato. And then once I tasted . . . wow. The soup is a velvety puree of the root vegetable, its natural sweetness heightened with a touch of brown sugar. Next, the spice of the andouille creeps in and sets the back of your tongue to tingle mode. I garnished mine with some crushed corn chips, a perfect complement to the sweet and the heat.

And if you are a greens fan, try Zelda’s collards or kale prepared with smoked turkey. I swear, you will not miss the pork!

Zelda especially looks forward to her Sundays at the Columbia Pike Farmers Market because of its “neighborhood” feel. She gets a lot of repeat customers and particularly enjoys engaging with the resident “foodies.”

Can’t make it on Sundays to the Columbia Pike Farmers Market? Not to worry. Zelda’s NoVa Soul is also currently available at two other Northern Virginia farmers markets. On Saturdays, you can visit Zelda at the Old Town Farmers Market or Lorraine at the Del Ray Farmers Market. Zelda is also available for catering gigs.

As for the future, Zelda dreams of a storefront and product placement in some area Whole Foods Markets (come on, Arlington!). I am keeping my fingers crossed for her, because we could all use more (NoVa) soul in our lives.

Look for more on Zelda’s Nova Soul website (you can watch a clip of her in action), and visit the new page.
