Teppanyaki style cooking spread to the U.S. 1964.
Origins (1945): Despite feeling traditional, teppanyaki is relatively modern. It was created in 1945 by Shigeji Fujioka of the Misono restaurant chain in Kobe, Japan. Post-WWII, Fujioka wanted a dining style that would appeal to American soldiers stationed in Japan who preferred grilled steak and familiar flavors over raw fish.
