General information

In December 1996, Ryukyukoku Matsuri Daiko Hawaii (RMD Hawaii) began life as a tiny seed, imported from Okinawa and lovingly planted in Honolulu. Nurtured by the tender care of founder Akemi Martin Sensei, that tiny seed grew and thrived. The Hawaii Chapter of Ryukyukoku Matsuri Daiko now includes over 75 active members on Oahu, Kauai, Maui and the Big Island. All the members take great pride and pleasure in sharing the true Eisa-spirit with the community through their performances at many diverse events. RMD Hawaii’s performances are truly unique, seamlessly blending traditional and contemporary influences with tremendous energy and the thunderous sound of the taiko drums. The choreography is a dynamic mix of traditional Eisa and Karate forms, with kata varying from crisp and masculine to soft and feminine. The music ranges from traditional Okinawan folk songs to contemporary rock music. Drummers use a shoulder sash to carry the large, powerful, red o-daiko in front of them. Each drummer is strikingly dressed in a uniform called mumunchinhantaa, inspired by classic Chinese costumes. RMD Hawaii’s members are committed to working together to build and maintain cross-cultural friendships and invite people of all backgrounds to join them in exploring and perpetuating Okinawan culture through the art and spirit of Eisa. By setting high standards and encouraging its members to strive for excellence, RMD Hawaii offers a tremendous opportunity to develop both teamwork and leadership skills. As we reflect on the past 15 years of Ryukyukoku Matsuri Daiko Hawaii, we are thankful for the ongoing support of the community. We look forward to maintaining these positive relationships and humbly ask for your continued support so that what began 15 years ago as just a tiny seed, can grow and flourish even further (and farther!) in the coming years.
