Bode's General Store

~ This Saturday, June 8th from 3-5pm: Bode's 100th Birthday Party! ~

Dear Friends:

As our logo states, Bode's has been “here a long time.” Our store has been in business for over a 100 years in the Abiquiu community. First we were known as Grant’s Mercantile, then as Sargent & Gonzales, and—for the last 100 years—as Bode's, the family name of Martin Bode, who joined the mercantile in 1919. The store has a remarkable history, and we are going to celebrate its centennial with a Bode's birthday party on Saturday, June 8th, from 3 to 5pm! You are all invited.

Please join us for birthday cake and refreshments with our guests of honor, the Bode family: Karl, Elizabeth, Josephine, Gertrude, and Charlotte, and their families. The Bode family has played a key role in the history of Abiquiu and its development. We are so honored that this large, wonderfully diverse family will be on hand to share memories and help usher in the next 100 years.

Put the date on your calendar, please.

Sincerely,
Constance & Dennis Liddy

Just a 1 hour drive from Abiquiu is Bandelier National Monument's Alcove House. Located 140 feet above the floor of Frijoles Canyon. It was once home to approximately 25 Ancestral Pueblo people. The 2.6 mile trail is a loop trail located near Santo Domingo Pueblo, New Mexico and is good for all skill levels.

From Jo Bertini's fabulously inspiring educational Talk last night at the Abiquiu Inn. So many "I had no idea!" Moments - Australia looks a lot like New Mexico but it's completely different. Did you know that when it rains the water drains to the interior of the country, not outward to the sea? Yeah, me neither.

Why So Many Artists Have Been Drawn to New Mexico

For generations, artists from Georgia O'Keeffe to Ken Price have followed New Mexico’s magnetic pull, finding inspiration in the high desert’s expansive vistas, quietude, and respite from social and market pressures.

“I’m out here in New Mexico—going somewhere—I’m not positive where—but it’s great,” she gushed in a letter to Stieglitz, dated August 15th. “Not like anything I ever saw before.”
“There is so much more space between the ground and sky out here it is tremendous,” she continued. “I want to stay.”

JIM NEWMAN
Wire wrapped Pendants & Bolos from Pedernal Chert.

After moving to New Mexico, I discovered a beautiful stone that is found in so many colors that it begs to be touched and examined. That stone is CHERT and is found abundantly nearby at Cerro Pedernal. The early Native Tribes valued this stone for making sharp tools and arrowheads; and Georgia O’Keeffe valued the mountain as evidenced by the number of times it appears in her work. Admiring this stone as I do, I felt compelled to share with others its natural beauty. I polish fragments of chert found on my land, wrap the best pieces and create Pendants and Bolos to wear and cherish.
