Ted Talks To…
One red brick. Two places: Toronto and Taiwan.
Architect Ron Shieh was born in Taiwan, studied architecture at the University of Toronto, and has spent almost forty years practicing in Canada.
What I found fascinating was the connection he drew between Toronto’s 19th-century red-brick buildings, George Leslie Mackay, and Oxford College in Tamsui.
It made me look at Taiwan’s architectural history differently.
There is a Canadian thread in that story too.
And Ron sees it from a very particular place: as a Hakka person, a Taiwanese person, and a Canadian architect.
Suddenly, the brick is no longer just a brick.
It carries movement, memory, migration, and the traces of people crossing between places.
Sometimes architecture tells you as much about people as it does about buildings.
Thank you Ron & Jean 🫶🏽
