The evolution of Soca Samosa
My family’s migration from Pakistan to the north of England happened sometime in the 50’s. My community and my parents brought with them an ENTIRE culture, including a vast culinary repertoire. These flavours were and are part of the fabric of my life. My favourite snack as a child was in fact, the SAMOSA. Some of my best memories include going to the cinema to watch a Bollywood movie, running back and forth to the cafeteria to buy fresh samosas with chutney. Forget popcorn and hot dogs…this was the real deal. My soul food was this steaming, spicy filling enveloped in a crispy, flaky pastry. No crumbs fell from my hands, I promise you.
Fast forward twenty, thirty, forty years and perfecting the making samosas with every decade, I have picked up a bandwagon of followers that eagerly await the next batch. A hobby turned into a passion, but it traces back generations and connects me with my past.
Trinidadians’ enthusiasm for street food is remarkable and that energy is what drove me to share not just an awesome food, but an iconic staple of my culture, with you.
What started as orders from friends and family for a dozen samosas quickly evolved into retail orders of 3 dozen and 30 dozen with requests escalating for parties and special events. Growing from strength to strength, the popularity of Soca Samosa fueled the creation of its own mini artisan factory and catering service.
