In Mesopotamian mythology, Anzu was a giant eagle who even the gods feared. But one day after Anzu had caught two bulls and was flying home to feed his chick, something terrible happened.

As Anzu called for his chick, he received no reply. He called out again. Silence. Anzu dropped the bulls and beat his wings. A hurricane followed. He roared so loudly even the gods feared what would happen. Anzu was going to rip apart the life of whatever god or man had hurt his chick.

But when he arrived at the nest, he didn’t believe his eyes. His chick was safe, well fed, and happy. Anzu looked around, confused. Then a man stepped forward. He looked like an ant in front of an eagle. This was Lugalbanda, the mortal man who would one day father Gilgamesh. ”I have taken care of your little one,” Lugalbanda said.

And no wonder Anzu’s chick was happy. It turned out Lugalbanda had indeed taken care of the chick by baking honey cookies and popping them into its beak. ”I shall let you have no opponents in the mountains,” Anzu said and blessed Lugalbanda.
