Significance of Bhogi

பழையன கழிதலும் புதியன புகுதலும்

Ushering the new

Bhogi is the first day of the Pongal festival, mainly celebrated in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and parts of Karnataka.

It marks a time of renewal, gratitude and transition

Bhogi symbolizes letting go of old possessions, habits, and negativity. People discard worn-out items to make way for new beginnings

Bhogi Mantulu (in Telugu)
Traditional bonfire is lit early in the morning, where old household items are burned. This represents cleansing and renewal

Honouring five elements of nature - Land /earth; water; fire; space; wind -thanking five elements of nature for a good harvest and praying for prosperity

It marks the start of the four-day Pongal celebrations, Bhogi; Thai Pongal; Mattu Pongal and kaanum Pongal

Farmers celebrate the successful harvest season and prepare for the new agricultural cycle

கூடாரை வெல்லும்சீர்க் கோவிந்தா! உன்தன்னைப்
பாடிப்பறை கொண்டு யாம்பெறு சம்மானம்
நாடு புகழும் பரிசினால் நன்றாக
சூடகமே தோள்வளையே தோடே செவிப்பூவே
பாடகமே என்றனைய பல்கலனும் யாமணிவோம்
ஆடை உடுப்போம் அதன்பின்னே பாற்சோறு
மூடநெய் பெய்து முழங்கை வழிவார
கூடி யிருந்து குளிர்ந்தேலோர்

Essence in English
“Oh Govinda of glorious fame, who conquered Kuṭārai!
By singing your praises and beating the sacred drum,
the rewards that we shall receive as praised by the whole world are these beautiful ornaments

We shall wear shining bangles on our arms,
earrings, ear-flowers,
anklets and many kinds of jewels.
We shall dress ourselves in fine clothes.

After that, we shall eat sweet rice mixed with milk,
rich ghee poured generously,
so full that it flows down to our elbows.

And thus, all of us together,
living in unity and joy,
let us rejoice and be happy
Oh beloved lord; accept our vow

The saint's intentional was to have a divine unison with lord Vishnu
She attains it on day 30th
Temple curd rice gets prepared on that day

I was introduced to this song by my beloved appa mainly because Akkara adisal gets prepared by my amma and he will check if my mother has added enough ghee so that it drips through his elbow 😁😁

This is a pudding made with rice, milk, jaggery, ghee spice mix of cardamom; nutmeg; mace; edible camphor; seasoned with mixed nuts

When I first learned about Thanksgiving, I instinctively compared it to our own harvest festivals—Onam, Sankranti / Pongal—each a form of thanksgiving in their own way.

What began as a simple attempt to keep the children happy slowly became a tradition in my home - Roasted pumpkin soup with garlic bread

Last night was no different—comfort, warmth, and a little personal version of Thanksgiving served in a bowl.
