Kopakaki-Dutegure is a coffee cooperative located in Rwanda’s Karongi District, on the shores of the beautiful Lake Kivu in the country’s western province. The cooperative was established in 2007 through the merger of two smaller cooperatives. Today, it has between 990 and 1,100 members who deliver their coffee cherries to the cooperative’s washing station. The members’ farms are scattered across the surrounding hills, and most producers transport their harvest by bicycle. The region’s abundant rainfall and high elevation allow the coffee cherries to ripen slowly, producing coffees with a distinctive flavour profile and a strong sense of place.

Paying women directly has had a significant social and economic impact on the community, enabling them to cover school fees for their children and pay for health insurance. To further strengthen women’s role within the cooperative, the governance structure has also been revised, giving women greater influence and the freedom to decide how to use the income generated from their coffee sales.
