"It's not uncommon to find a kiln next to a villa, but it would be a small one just for making tiles for the one villa," he said.

"But at Corby they were producing tiles to sell to a wide area, which is a much more modern idea.

"The next step is scientifically examining them under a microscope to look at what's in the clay, so that longer term we can see where they were moving them to.

Andrew Harston from ABP said the £2m "is key to the construction of transformational infrastructure, which will enable the manufacturing, integration and assembly of floating offshore wind components at Port Talbot".

Julie James conceded that the Welsh government's investment of £1m was a drop in the ocean, considering the level of funding needed to deliver floating wind offshore in south west Wales.

Of the 23 environmental targets it looked at, it assessed 14 as "off track" while the remaining nine could not be assessed because the evidence was not available.

It said progress towards climate change adaptation was poor, and "particularly concerning" in the agricultural sector.

A spokesman for Defra said it would publish a new environmental improvement plan later this month that would help it to meet its targets to protect the natural world, tackle climate change and halt the decline in species populations by 2030.

In Africa, vultures are also dying rapidly, but for different reasons.

Across the continent, vulture populations have shrunk by up to 97%. Seven out of the 11 African-Eurasian vulture species are at risk of extinction.

Here, vultures are the unintentional victims of poisoning aimed at killing large predators, such as lions, says Darcy Ogada, Africa director of the Peregrine Fund, a non-profit that protects threatened and endangered birds worldwide.

Farmers who lose cows to a pride of lions spread highly toxic pesticides on the carcasses in the hope of killing the predators, but often the lions never return and the vultures are the ones that suffer, she says.

Poachers also sprinkle pesticides on dead elephants to kill vultures and stop them from alerting park rangers by circling overhead, she adds.

What unites every re-telling is Collodi's indelible images: a wooden boy; a talking cricket; a nose that gets longer when you lie. But running alongside all of those is a powerful truth. "I think it's fear of the adult world," says del Toro, "this idea that you are thrown into a world of adult values that are not only hard to understand but eventually prove false. That's how I came to feel as a kid. All the things adults told you, they didn't understand themselves." In the first half of the book, it's a few villains who cause trouble for Pinocchio. In the second half, four black rabbits carry a coffin into his room to take him away while he is still alive, and a judge (who happens to be a gorilla) throws him in jail because he is the victim of a theft. As fantastical as these episodes are, the fear they evoke, the feeling of being lost and powerless in a grown-up society where nothing makes sense, is more recognisable than the relatively orderly and logical yarns in most children's books.

New discoveries of life beneath the ice – whether species of algae or these more complex lifeforms are being made almost every season. But, as the Earth heats up and the oceans warm due to climate change, the conditions are changing at a rapid rate.

Back in the Arctic, Frey is tracking the spread of the sorts of poisonous algal blooms that frequently occur further south, a threat to sea life and everything that eats it.

"If they're toxic, they can be really harmful in terms of shellfish poisoning or certain species can clog the gills of salmon and other fish species," she says. "It's really important to monitor them, particularly in terms of the indigenous communities that are heavily reliant on subsistence hunting."

Climate change is an added pressure on scientists to document and understand life beneath the ice. Because what we know now is just the tip of the iceberg.

In this party example, it is the time gap between when you meet your new acquaintance and, later, when you find yourself in need of her name, that makes for forgetfulness. In a series of earlier experiments starting in the 1970s, however, Robert Bjork found other ways to disorient his research subjects on their paths to a desired memory. For instance, introducing confusing or irrelevant inputs, à la McGeoch, or changing their sensory cues – sights, sounds, and smells that might trigger a memory – by asking them to recall information in new surroundings. Regardless of how forgetfulness came about, when overcome it led to stronger, longer-lasting memories.

On the rest of the roughly 80km journey, we slowed several times for families of elephants and herds of kudu to cross the tracks. We stopped to spy giraffes grazing in the canopy while zebras and steenbok munched on the underbrush. We saw more lilac-breasted rollers as well as a flock of enormous southern ground-hornbills, spied a brown-hooded (and orange-beaked) kingfisher and heard the cry of a grey go-away bird just in time to spot it.

But cinematic fantasies about "savage, primitive people" making a meal of their fellow men and women aren't confined to any one region. Two Thousand Maniacs (1964), The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974) and The Hills Have Eyes (1977) are all set in isolated US backwaters, while Soylent Green (1973), A Boy and His Dog (1975) and The Road (2009) are all set in dystopian futures. Anywhere that resources are scarce, and society's rules don't apply, can be a home to cannibals. Even Bones and All makes a point of keeping Maren in small towns on the fringes of civilisation. Similarly, there are fact-based dramas which show that any of us might rethink our vegetarianism if conditions were extreme enough. Frank Marshall's Alive (1993), one of the inspirations for Yellowjackets, tells the true story of the rugby players who were stranded in the Andes after a plane crash in 1972. "I still think the most upsetting moment of cannibalism in screen history is in Alive," says Waddell, "where the characters decide to eat one of their dead friends in order to survive a little longer. I find that more upsetting than any of the flesh-munching in Cannibal Holocaust."

Bret Easton Ellis – an early reader of Tartt's manuscript for The Secret History – introduced his friend to his literary agent, who secured a $450,000 advance for the book. On its publication in 1992 the reviews were overwhelmingly positive (Time magazine called it "viscerally compelling", Newsday labelled it "a thinking person's thriller" ) – though not entirely, with The Independent saying "style is confused with substance time and again". Still, the hype machine was already in full swing – with Tartt landing an eight-page profile in Vanity Fair and accompanying photoshoot alongside her pug, Pongo. Speaking to the New York Times at the time, her publisher Sonny Mehta said: "We didn't know what she looked like when we bought the book, but it certainly hasn't hurt."

By engaging in quiet-firing behaviours, managers are likely to be playing the long game. In theory, it’s low risk and minimal effort; the hope is that by withdrawing support, the worker soon realises they don’t have a future at the company and moves elsewhere.

However, this approach can have collateral damage. The tactic means firms and managers can end up saddled with workers they don’t want, leading to managers engaging in behaviours often seen as passive-aggressive, says Kayes. “You stop offering the employee opportunities to advance; you stop inviting them to certain meetings; you stop providing them important work and feedback.”

When the ship cracks an ice sheet 3m thick on its way there, it sounds raw and without reservation. The name of the ship means "50 Years of Victory" in Russian, and refers to the 50th anniversary of the Soviet Union's triumph in World War Two. To commemorate its launch, the ship carried the Olympic flame to the North Pole in 2013 during the run-up to the Sochi Winter Olympics. Powered by a pair of 171-megawatt nuclear reactors and two 27.6-megawatt steam turbo-generators, the almost 160m-long icebreaker can reach 21.4 knots – almost 40km per hour – and sail nonstop for almost six years without returning to land for refuelling. With nuclear reactors on board, fuel stops become almost a thing of the past.
