Origin and History
Kare-Kare is thought to have a multi-cultural origin.
One theory suggests it was introduced by the ๐๐จ๐ซ๐จ ๐๐ฅ๐ข๐ญ๐ ๐๐ซ๐จ๐ฆ ๐ญ๐ก๐ ๐ฌ๐จ๐ฎ๐ญ๐ก๐๐ซ๐ง ๐๐ก๐ข๐ฅ๐ข๐ฉ๐ฉ๐ข๐ง๐๐ฌ, ๐ฐ๐ก๐จ ๐ก๐๐ ๐๐จ๐ง๐ง๐๐๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง๐ฌ ๐ฐ๐ข๐ญ๐ก ๐ญ๐ก๐ ๐๐ง๐๐ข๐๐ง ๐ฌ๐ฎ๐๐๐จ๐ง๐ญ๐ข๐ง๐๐ง๐ญ, particularly through maritime trade. The dish shares some similarities with Indian curry, especially in its sauce, which may explain its name. However, Kare-Kare is unique because it lacks the spices commonly found in curry and instead relies on ground peanuts or peanut butter to give it its signature flavor.
Another origin story ties Kare-Kare to ๐๐๐ฆ๐ฉ๐๐ง๐ ๐, a region known as the "๐๐ฎ๐ฅ๐ข๐ง๐๐ซ๐ฒ ๐๐๐ฉ๐ข๐ญ๐๐ฅ ๐จ๐ ๐ญ๐ก๐ ๐๐ก๐ข๐ฅ๐ข๐ฉ๐ฉ๐ข๐ง๐๐ฌ." In this version, the dish was a Kapampangan invention, with local ingredients like peanuts and annatto seeds (atsuete) giving the dish its golden hue. Over time, it became a special dish prepared for large celebrations, particularly in Filipino households.
