Cold Brew vs. Iced Coffee.
While some may consider iced coffee to be a summertime drink, we are a firm believer that it's acceptable to drink this cool, caffeinated beverage year-round. But when you arrive at one of your favorite coffee shops, you are given the choice between iced coffee and cold brew. Both are cold, both may come with ice—so what’s the difference?
Well, the big difference is how they’re made.
What Is Cold Brew Coffee?
It takes more effort to make cold brew than it does to make iced coffee. Time is what gives cold brew coffee its delicious taste. Coarsely ground coffee is soaked in cold water for at least twelve hours to create a cold brew. The flavor of coffee gets stronger the longer it sits. Serving cold brew with ice is acceptable because it usually has a stronger flavor.
After the grounds have been removed during the filtering process, you are left with a coffee concentrate that may be combined with milk or water and served over ice. Cold brew produces coffee that is typically less acidic and harsh than iced coffee because it employs time rather than heat to extract the coffee's oils, sugars, and caffeine.
