Kahit may sapat na supply ng bigas, tumaas pa rin ang presyo nito sa Metro Manila ng mga P2 per kilogram dahil sa pagtaas ng production cost ng mga magsasaka. Sa isang panayam, sinabi ni Agriculture Assistant Secretary Kristine Evangelista na umabot na sa P20 bawat kg ang presyo ng palay, samantalang sa ibang lugar, umabot na ito sa P23 bawat kg.

Ayon kay Evangelista, ang presyo ng ilang agricultural inputs ay tumaas, kaya tiyak na may epekto ito sa kanilang production cost. Sa Pilipinas, karaniwan nang ang presyo ng bigas sa merkado ay dalawang beses ng presyo ng palay sa panahon ng pag-aani. Ang farm-gate price ng palay ay tumutukoy sa presyong binubuo ng mga magsasaka at mga negosyante, kung saan ang presyong ito ay kadalasang hinuhulma ng mga magsasaka mismo.

President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. has launched Kadiwa Ng Pangulo at Pili, Camarines Sur, with the hope that his goal of P20 per kilo rice will come true. The project's goal is to create a direct market for farmers and fishers, as well as micro, small, and medium businesses (MSMEs). A kilo of rice is currently sold for P25 per kilo at Kadiwa, and there are 500 Kadiwa stalls across the country, providing consumers with cheaper basic commodities. According to the Department of Agriculture's price monitoring as of March 15, the price of well-milled rice in Metro Manila markets ranges from P40 to P46 per kilo.

"Makikita ninyo 'yung bigas, ang aking pangarap na sinabi na bago ako umupo na sana maipababa natin ang presyo ng bigas ng P20, hindi pa tayo umaabot doon... dahan-dahan palapit nasa P25 na tayo, kaunti na lang maibababa natin 'yan," Marcos said in his speech.
