🐟✨ Exploring Sri Lankan Cuisine: Fish Ambulthiyal 🇱🇰

Fish Ambulthiyal is a traditional Sri Lankan dish that features chunks of fish (often tuna) slow-cooked in a flavorful blend of spices, including black pepper, cinnamon, cloves, and goraka (a type of dried fruit). This dish is known for its tangy and spicy taste, achieved through the marination process and slow cooking technique.

The word “Ambul” in Sinhalese means sour, highlighting the tangy flavor that this dish is famous for. The slow cooking process allows the fish to absorb all the rich flavors of the spices, resulting in a mouthwatering and aromatic dish that is a true delight for the senses.

I’m thrilled to share a taste of this authentic Sri Lankan delicacy with my first-ever out-of-Norway order to Denmark! 🌍🚚

Embracing the rich flavors and traditions of Sri Lankan cuisine on this beautiful Sunday! 😍🥰

Today’s special lunch features a vibrant spread of red kakulu rice, a feast for the eyes and the palate. The aromatic Pol sambol adds a delightful kick of spice, perfectly complementing the crispy fried sadine fish. And let’s not forget the creamy, fragrant coconut sambol that ties it all together in a symphony of flavors. As if that wasn’t enough, the addition of Kiri kos curry, a delightful jackfruit curry, adds another layer of savory goodness to this already exquisite meal.
Each bite is a celebration of culture and culinary artistry, reminding me of the warmth and love that goes into every homemade meal.
As I savor each mouthful, I’m grateful for the simple joys of good food and cherished family recipes.

Here’s to the magic of Sundays and the delicious memories we create around the dining table.

One of my favorite breakfast foods: Boiled Breadfruit (Del), grated coconut, and lunumiris (Chili sambol)

Nothing beats the simple pleasure of a hearty breakfast, and one of my all-time favorites is the wholesome combination of boiled breadfruit (Del), freshly grated coconut, and a zesty kick of lunumiris (Chili sambol). Each bite is a celebration of tropical flavors and the rich culinary heritage of Sri Lanka, where this dish has been a cherished morning ritual for generations. The tender, starchy goodness of the breadfruit, perfectly complemented by the sweet, nutty essence of coconut, is elevated to new heights with the fiery allure of the lunumiris. It’s a symphony of tastes and textures that never fails to awaken the senses and set a delicious tone for the day ahead. This breakfast is not just a meal; it’s a reminder of the simple joys that make life so beautiful. So, join me in savoring this delightful feast and let its warmth and vibrancy fill your day with the same joy it brings to mine.

Sri Lankan cuisine offers a wide range of dishes that are rich in flavour and unique in taste. One such dish is "pittu," which is a popular breakfast food made from rice flour and coconut in Sri Lanka.

Pittu is a cylindrical-shaped steamed dish that is typically served with coconut milk, lentil curry, and spicy sambol. It is a staple food in many Sri Lankan households and is often enjoyed as a breakfast or dinner dish.

The key ingredient in pittu is rice flour, which is mixed with grated coconut and water to form a moist dough. The dough is then placed in a cylindrical-shaped steamer, with alternating layers of grated coconut, and steamed until cooked.

The result is a soft, fluffy, and slightly sweet dish that is rich in coconut flavor and has a unique texture. The dish is traditionally served with a spicy curry( i made shrimp 🍤 curry), which balances the sweetness of the pittu.

Pittu is a versatile dish that can be made with different types of flour, including wheat flour, ragi flour, and even red rice flour. However, the traditional Sri Lankan pittu is made with white rice flour and grated coconut.

Overall, Sri Lankan coconut and rice flour pittu is a must-try dish for anyone who loves exploring new and unique flavors. Its rich coconut flavor and unique texture make it a truly delicious and satisfying dish.
