What is your favourite photo you've ever taken? 📸

Opening today: Ed van der Elsken. Up Close. A true pioneer of street photography, Van der Elsken had an instinctive, deeply personal way of connecting with the people he photographed. Drawing from the complete work archive acquired by the Rijksmuseum and the Nederlands Fotomuseum in 2019, the exhibition traces all the key moments in his career - from his earliest days as an independent photographer to his deeply personal documentation of his own dying process. This is as close to Ed van der Elsken as you can get: well-known classics alongside never-before-seen photographs, contact sheets, personal letters, book designs, and film fragments.

On view from today until 13 September 2026.

🔥 Brandende apen in de lucht… Dat is een scène die je niet snel vergeet.
In dit schilderij van James Ensor komt de slotscène van Edgar Allan Poe tot leven: hofnar Hop-Frog neemt wraak op een corrupte koning en zijn ministers. De nar overtuigt de koning en zijn ministers om als geketende ‘apen‘ naar een gemaskerd bal te gaan. Op het hoogtepunt hijst Hop-Frog ze als een kroonluchter de lucht in en steekt ze in brand.
Ensor staat bekend als een scherpe criticus van macht. Met maskers en monsters verbeeldt hij de angsten en dreigingen van zijn tijd en de schijnheiligheid en kleinburgerlijkheid van de mensen.

In this painting, James Ensor brings the closing scene of Edgar Allan Poe’s story to life: the court jester Hop-Frog exacts revenge upon a corrupt king and his ministers. The jester convinces the king and his ministers to attend a masquerade ball disguised as chained apes. At the highpoint of the ball, Hop-Frog hoists them aloft like a chandelier and sets them ablaze.
