In the early 2000s, artist Pierre Sernet set up a wooden “tea room” cube in the world’s most unexpected places from Rio’s beaches to India’s Thar desert, from Times Square to a Chinese mountain village and made tea for whoever happened to be standing there.

No visas, no schedules, no shared language. Just a cup of tea and a stranger.

Sernet calls the series One echoing ichigo ichie, “one time, one meeting,” a core idea in the Japanese tea ceremony. The point is simple: however different our cultures or circumstances, respect and human connection are always possible.
