Coffee beans come from the fruit known as coffee cherries, which are bright red or yellow when they ripen. Each cherry contains seeds, and these seeds are what we call coffee beans. The cherries grow on coffee plants, which thrive in warm, tropical climates around the world. When the cherries are ripe, farmers pick them by hand or use machines.
Once the cherries are collected, they go through a process to get the beans out. First, the outer fruit is removed, and then the seeds are dried. After drying, the beans are often roasted to bring out their rich flavors. Roasting is a crucial step because it transforms the green beans into the brown coffee beans that we are familiar with. The longer the beans are roasted, the darker and more intense the flavor becomes.
