The Ema Dance of Urhobo people:

Ema is a royalty music & dance performed majorly by Urhobo people from Agbon, Okpe, Olomu, Udu, Ughelli & Uvwie Kingdoms.

It is performed during the coronation of Kings, installation of chiefs & funerals of nobles.

Ema is six centuries old

From the Urhobo religion called Igbe (meaning Dance in Urhobo) down to Christianity, the Urhobo people are known to love dancing.

And the Ema dance is just one of many.

The Ema dance is vigorous. It involves swinging & pulling of one’s arms towards oneself. The movement of the arms indicate that Ema dancers wish to be rich by pulling wealth to themselves.

The Ema dance has its origins from Okpe & Ughelli kingdoms dating back to early 1400.

A research work was carried out on Ema Dance by the Department of music in Delta state university, Abraka. It was headed by Rebecca Ufuomaroghene Ogbeide.
