The first question everybody asks: if I put money in, can I take it back out?

Yes. Cash out goes to your own Nigerian bank account, usually in minutes. Any day you want.

Money you cannot touch is not savings.

Happy new month. September has 30 days, and if we are honest, salary usually sees about 10 of them.

New cycle, one small change: the day the alert lands, move a small part into dollars before the spending starts. Rent, school fees and market money still collect their share. The part you moved is just not sitting in the same account they collect from.

Send this to the one person whose salary finishes on the 5th. You know yourselves.

Spend in naira. Save in dollars. Two pots, one holiday.

Eid-el-Maulud is a spending day, and it should be. Food, family, travel, gifts. That pot is naira and it empties on purpose.

The other pot is the one you are not touching this week. It does not have to sit in naira while it waits. Part of it can sit in dollars, so the amount stops moving, and it comes back out as naira on the day you need it.

No promise attached to either pot. Just two different jobs.

The month usually eats the salary. This time a slice of it sat in dollars, out of reach.

One day with her: money in from her own bank at a cafe, a balance that reads in dollars and naira, cash out at the market when she actually needs naira. The rate is on screen before she confirms, and the wallet is hers alone. No bank in the way.

Which one are you: spend it before the 10th, or park a slice where the month cannot touch it?

Before your first add money, five things to have ready.

A Nigerian bank account in your own name. A one-time ID check, the first time only. The amount you want to add. The rate and the fee, both on screen before you confirm. And that same account, ready for cash out later.

The ID check is Nigerian rules and everyone does it. It happens once, not every time.

"Dollars are only for people who follow the market."

Most Nigerians holding dollars are not following anything. They are shop owners, teachers and salary workers protecting what they already have from a number that keeps moving.

You do not need a chart to do it. You just need the amount to stop shifting while you plan.

The money from home lands, and then it waits.

Rent is due in January. School fees are in March. So it sits in naira until the month it is actually needed.

By the time that month arrives the amount has not changed. What it buys has.

Part of it can sit in dollars instead, so the number stops moving while it waits. Then when you need naira, you cash out to your own Nigerian bank account.

July's inflation figure came out on Monday. Headline inflation eased again, down to 15.43 percent from 15.91 in June.

Food went the other way. It rose to 20.31 percent from 17.52.

So the number in the news is falling and the number on your receipt is not. Either way, money left sitting still in naira keeps losing a little ground every month.

That is why some Nigerians keep part of what they save in dollars. The amount stops moving, so a plan made in June still means something in December.
