Some takeaways from the Southwest Agricultural Summit (SWAS) 2016.
To policymakers-
Government is resolved to have input of AgroPeneurs, investors and others in making policies that will set Nigeria in the right direction in agriculture. This was shown in there readiness to dialogue with us at the SWAS 2016, but this is not sufficient until we could see government take the steps required to unify the efforts of this sector. Government obviously now see the potential in the agricultural sector, however whether the political and administrative leadership have the vision cm appetite to do what it takes to hit the nail on the head of this challenges at hand is the real question. (Dr. Doyin Salami, LBS):
-Specific plans of action must be put up to guide all players, for example if the southwest governments all agree to supply 10% each of Lagos State food demand daily.
-Available credit should focus on access of the farmer to resources through credit supply of input and lease of machineries until harvest.
-Government must broker more land access relationship making more of the arable land laying fallow to be put to good and more efficient use.
-Extension training must be integrated seamlessly with farm operations in whole institutions of higher learning.
-Government policies should be better broken down for farmers to ensure how every agri-project contributes towards achieving the overall goals.
-Continuous project monitoring of all funded projects in order to prevent politicians hijacking government policies and programmes
