SHE FINALLY DECORATED HER FIRST REAL CAKE… AND I COULDN’T HAVE BEEN PROUDER.

Every baker remembers their first real buttercream cake.

The nervousness.

The shaky hands.

The countless moments of stopping to ask,
“Ma, is this okay?”

For weeks, my student has been practicing on dummy cakes.

I wanted her to understand buttercream, build confidence, make mistakes, correct them, and improve… without the pressure of working on an actual cake.

Then came the day I said,

“Today, we are decorating a real cake.”

She was excited… but I could also see the nervousness.

Step by step, she trusted the process.

She remembered what she had been taught.

She corrected herself where necessary.

And before we knew it…

This beautiful cake was sitting right in front of us.

Was it perfect?

No.

But was it progress?

Absolutely…

One thing I always tell my students is this:

“Your first attempt doesn’t have to be perfect. It just has to be better than yesterday’s.”

That’s how confidence is built.

That’s how professionals are made.

SHE ASKED ME TO ADD SUGAR TO HER MEAT PIE… AND MY FIRST THOUGHT WAS, ‘SUGAR? IN MEAT PIE?

A while ago, I delivered some meat pies to a client.

After she tasted them, she reached out with a wonderful review.

She loved them.

Then she said,

“For my next order, I have one request…”

I smiled and replied,

“Sure, what is it?”

She said,

“Please add sugar to my meat pie.”

I paused for a second.

Sugar?

In meat pie?

Honestly, I had never heard anyone request that before.

But then I remembered something very important:

Every customer is different.

What one person enjoys might not be another person’s preference.

So when her next order came in, I made hers exactly the way she wanted it.

I even told one of my students,

“See this order very well o… this client likes sugar in her meat pie.”

Because I had other orders that day, I was extra careful not to mix hers with the others.

Imagine another customer biting into a sugary meat pie without expecting it.

When she received her order…

She absolutely loved it…😊

Her feedback reminded me that sometimes, it’s the little things that make customers feel valued.

One thing I believe as a business owner is this:

Your customers shouldn’t have to fit into your business.

Whenever possible, your business should be willing to adapt to your customers’ reasonable preferences.

That’s what keeps people coming back.

SHE THOUGHT MY BUSINESS WAS IN ABUJA… UNTIL SHE SENT ME A MESSAGE.

A few days ago, someone reached out to me on WhatsApp.

She said,

“I saw your shawarma post. Do you make shawarma?”

I replied,

“Yes, I do.”

Then she said something that made me laugh.

“I didn’t know I could get shawarma here. I thought you were based in Abuja!” 😂

I was surprised.

I told her,

“No o… I’m right here in the same location as you.”

She explained that she had been seeing my posts on TikTok for a while, but somehow she assumed my business wasn’t around.

The funny part?

By the end of our conversation, she placed an order for yoghurt and meat pie. 🥰

That conversation reminded me of something important.

Sometimes, people don’t patronize your business not because they don’t like what you sell but because they simply don’t know where you’re located.

Never assume everyone knows where your business is.

Keep mentioning your location.

Keep reminding people.

Your next customer might be just a few streets away and not even know it.

SHE SAID SOMETHING TO ME THAT MADE ME SMILE… AND HONESTLY, I’LL NEVER FORGET IT.

One day after class, one of my students walked up to me and said,

“Ma, I want to tell you something.”

I smiled and said,

“I’m listening.”

She paused for a moment and then said,

“Ma… I don’t even know how to put it, but your recipes are out of this world.”

I couldn’t help but laugh.

Then she continued.

She told me she had started taking pastry orders, and the feedback from her clients had been amazing.

Not just that…

Even her siblings had tasted what she made and couldn’t stop talking about it.

Then she said something that truly touched me.

“Thank God I came here to learn. Thank God I didn’t go elsewhere.”

At that moment, I realized something.

As a tutor, the greatest reward isn’t just teaching someone how to bake.

It’s watching them become confident enough to sell, deliver quality, and receive amazing reviews from their own clients.
