When I gave birth to my first child, I practised exclusive breastfeeding for 6 months.

However, as soon as I introduced food, feeding became a serious challenge.

I tried pap.

Let me continue what happened yesterday…

At the health department, I was told I need to go for a food handler test.

They’ll check my health, inspect my production process, and even verify where I operate from.

The cost?
for the test,

And if approved, I’ll still pay more which i don't know the exact amount it's going to cost me, and to be allowed to sell there — plus tax on sales.

At first, I paused.

Not because it’s impossible…
But because it made me think deeper.

This is what many people don’t see behind food businesses:
The process.
The standards.
The responsibility.

But one thing is clear:

If I’m going to do this, I’ll do it right.

I didn’t share everything that happened yesterday… but I think I should.

I went back again to the office that asked me to bring samples.

This time, I was taken to their health department.

They were speaking Yoruba… I didn’t understand the words, but from their body language, it felt like:
“This lady has been coming here for days… please consider her.”

That moment meant something to me.

Because it showed that consistency speaks — even when people don’t fully know you yet.

Then they turned to me and explained what I need to do before I can sell my product there…

Honestly, it made me realise something:

Selling food — especially something people and babies consume — is not something to do casually.

It requires structure. Cleanliness. Trust.

I didn’t post yesterday… but I need to tell you what happened.

I went back to the office that asked me to bring samples.

At the gate, I wasn’t even allowed in at first… I had to call for identification before they let me enter.

Finally got in.
Sat down.
Waited.

He came back and said something I didn’t expect:

“I’m not the one who can approve you… because your product is food. It needs health department approval.”

At that moment, it hit me…

This business is deeper than I thought.

And something else happened in that office…
I didn’t understand the language they were speaking, but I understood the message.

I’ll share that part later today.

For now, I’m heading out again with a different mindset.

Last week Tuesday, I stepped out to market my pap in Lagos… not knowing exactly where to go.

I asked for directions.
I walked into hospitals.
I introduced myself with confidence.

And the response?

“We don’t allow sellers here.”
