Data from Nigeria’s leading food scientists’ Lab shows that in every 3 Nigerian 2 is either living with or at high risk of at least one NCD burden.
Five years ago (2016); WHO data revealed that out of the total 160,000 deaths recorded in Algeria- a country in Northern Africa region. Non-Communicable Disease such as Diabetes, Obesity, Cancer, Cardiovascular disease etc. was estimated to account for over 76% of all deaths? And In East Africa 40% of all deaths was attributed to these same NCDs and countries such as Namibia, Seychelles and Mauritius attributed more than 50% of total deaths to NCDs.
And even now, this trend is not just going away, the WHO has just estimated that over the next decade, there is an expected 17% increase in NCDs related deaths globally and that the Africa region is expected to have a 27% increase.
And to bring this home, a recent study conducted by WellNewMe and published on a leading Nigerian online Newspaper put that “75% of Nigerians are at risk of NCDs”.
This trend must be stop! Numerous evidences has shown the relationship of more than 90% of these NCDs with our lifestyle- and study has shown that increase utility and access of prescribed nutrition with dietary service is capable reversing this trend. And In fact, the top six NC diseases responsible for 70% of NCD related deaths worldwide are manageable and actually modifiable with complementary dietary/nutritional interventions.
