Puff Adder (Bitis arietans) - Highly Venomous

The Puff Adder is widespread over much of sub-Saharan Africa. It is a heavy-bodied snake that relies on its excellent camouflage and is reluctant to move.

Much of its life is spent in camouflage mode and recent research has shown that when hiding, the Puff Adder will not hiss or strike when approached, as this would give away its presence. It is an ambush hunter that will coil up into a striking position and await its prey. This can last several days or even weeks.

Puff Adder venom is potently cytotoxic, causing severe pain, swelling, blistering and in many cases severe tissue damage. Polyvalent antivenom is effective and should be administered.

Die Nederduitse Gereformeerde Kerk, Usakos, staan uit soos 'n baken in die dorpie:

Die Nederduitse Gereformeerde Kerk in Usakos vorm deel van die ryke geskiedenis van die NG Kerk in Namibië. Die kerk het ontstaan uit die behoefte om Afrikaanse lidmate in Sentraal-Namibië geestelik te bedien, veral in ’n tyd toe gemeenskappe oor groot afstande versprei was en predikante slegs periodiek dorpe kon besoek.

Aanvanklik is Usakos bedien as deel van groter omliggende gemeentes, veral Omaruru. Eredienste is reeds voor die middel van die 20ste eeu in Usakos gehou, en die kerkgebou is in 1936 opgerig.
Met groeiende lidmaattalle is die Nederduitse Gereformeerde Kerk Usakos op 16 November 1946 amptelik as ’n selfstandige gemeente gestig.

Sedertdien het die kerk ’n belangrike rol gespeel in die geestelike en gemeenskapslewe van Usakos. Oor dekades heen was dit ’n plek van aanbidding, hoop en saamstaan, en bly dit vandag steeds ’n getuienis van geloof en volgehoue bediening in die dorp se geskiedenis.
