Swiftlets build their nest many will think of it as saliva however, the secretion is only for nest building; it has no known digestive function. When the swiftlets interweaves feathers between the strands of secretions a strong composite material is formed ensuring the nest to be strong enough to hold the weight of the parent birds and their two nestlings.

It’s a myth that edible red bird’s nest comes from swiftlets’ saliva 🕊. It actually comes from the mineral in the cave or via the oxidation of the minerals in the cave causing the bird’s nest into crimson red in color.
