Not every table is meant for everyone — and that’s something we’ve come to accept.

Recently, we received a review that said our food was “decent,” and that there are other places that do it better. That may very well be true. We’ve never claimed to be the best Peranakan restaurant out there.

What we are, though, is deeply intentional.

We cook by appointment and require pre-ordering not to make things difficult, but because it’s the only way a small team like ours can truly care for every dish that leaves our kitchen. It allows us to:
– prepare ingredients fresh, not in bulk
– avoid unnecessary food waste
– cook each dish to order, not reheat
– serve you without long waiting times

This is not a fast operation, and it’s not meant to be.

Our food is closer to what you’d find at home — the kind your amma or grandmother would make. It’s not designed to overwhelm your palate with intensity, but to comfort you with balance. We don’t rely on artificial flavouring to amplify taste, which means sometimes it may come across gentler, quieter… but also more honest.

We also want to be honest about something else — we are still learning.

Over time, we’ve had experienced Baba and Nyonya dine with us. They’ve tasted our food, shared their stories, and generously offered feedback on how certain dishes could be improved. Those moments are incredibly meaningful to us. We listen, we refine, and we keep tweaking because we want to do justice to the cuisine we care so deeply about.

Constructive feedback, given with sincerity, is something we are always grateful for. It helps us grow, quietly but steadily.

We understand that some guests arrive with expectations of a full-service restaurant, or something closer to fine dining. We are neither. What we offer is a cosy space, good service, a small kitchen, and food made with patience, care, and intention.

And that may not be for everyone.

But for those who understand — who appreciate food that is thoughtfully prepared, who don’t mind slowing down, who believe that a meal can feel like home — we will continue to cook for you, the only way we know how.

With heart, always.

Last week was a busy and rather interesting one for us.

We had the pleasure of hosting a few familiar faces from the F&B industry. Then there’s an up-and-coming Indonesian influencer and her friends who came by to try our food. What stood out most was how seriously they took their craft — every dish was thoughtfully tasted, notes were taken, and even research was done on the spot based on what we shared. And they’re young too. 😜 Really impressive to see that level of dedication.

We also welcomed a family who travelled all the way from Kajang to celebrate a birthday. Such a lovely family. Some of them are Eurasian and grew up with both Nyonya and Kristang flavours, which made the experience even more meaningful. Conversations flowed easily, stories were shared, and it reminded us how deeply food connects people to memory and heritage.

Looking forward to the rest of the week and wondering who we will be meeting next. 😊

Nasi Ulam

Nasi ulam is a heritage dish deeply rooted in Malay and Peranakan (Nyonya) kitchens, where rice is tossed with an abundance of finely sliced herbs, raw vegetables, aromatics, and often grated coconut and fish. It reflects a time when cooking was guided by what grew around you — fresh, seasonal, and intensely aromatic. Over generations, it became a hallmark of Nyonya refinement, where skill wasn’t just about flavour, but precision.

In the old days, one of the clearest ways to tell if a Nyonya was truly skilled was through her knife work. Every leaf, herb, and ingredient had to be sliced painstakingly fine — almost feather-like. The finer the cut, the better the texture and the more harmonious the dish. It’s a labour of patience and pride, something we still honour today by spending hours carefully preparing each component.

Nasi ulam is also deeply connected to wellness. Traditionally, it’s often prepared for women during confinement after childbirth. The mix of herbs and fresh ingredients is believed to help with recovery, improve circulation, reduce bloating, and restore the body’s balance.

From a health perspective, it’s naturally nourishing:
• Packed with fresh herbs rich in antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties
• High in fibre from raw vegetables, supporting digestion
• Uses minimal oil, making it light yet satisfying
• Contains natural aromatics like ginger, turmeric, and lemongrass, known for their healing benefits

It’s a dish that looks simple, but carries depth — in history, in technique, and in the quiet discipline behind every finely sliced ingredient.

Nyonya cuisine does not have one voice.
It has two distinct expressions shaped by history, geography, and time.

Both trace their roots to the early Peranakan communities of the Malay Archipelago — where Chinese settlers adapted their cooking to local ingredients and traditions.

But over generations, the flavours evolved differently.

In Melaka, one of the earliest Peranakan settlements, time shaped the cuisine into something deep and rounded.

Influenced strongly by Malay and Indonesian culinary, cooking here leans into richness — coconut milk, slow braises, and a gentle sweetness that lingers.
Dishes are built for comfort, layered patiently, and meant to be savoured.

Further north in Penang, the table tells a different story.

A trading port shaped by movement, exchange, and influence — including strong Thai culinary notes — Penang’s interpretation became brighter, sharper, more expressive.

Here, flavour is defined by contrast:
tamarind against chilli, herbs against heat, savouriness lifted by acidity.

Nothing sits heavy. Everything moves.

Two regions. Two philosophies. One heritage.

We cook in the Penang Nyonya tradition —
where balance is not richness, but clarity.

Flavours that are bold, clean, and deliberately structured.
The kind that reveal themselves slowly, then stay with you long after.

If Melaka is memory,
Penang is movement.

Desserts, done right.

We’ve been getting a lot of love for our warm desserts — and here’s why.

No shortcuts. No compromises. Just carefully balanced ingredients, refined over time until every bite is exactly how it should be — whether it melts in your mouth or gives you that perfect, satisfying bite.

We use only the freshest santan and real gula Melaka — because quality makes all the difference.

Flavours that don’t just sit quietly… they speak.

And sweetness? Always controlled. Never overwhelming. Just right.

Some of our customers have even told us our desserts rival their favourite dessert shops — which honestly means the world to us.

We take pride in serving you a warm bowl of dessert to end your meal — a proper cuci mulut, the way it’s meant to be.

Dessert lineup:
Monday & Tuesday — Tiga Sekawan
Wednesday & Thursday — Bee Koh Moi
Friday & Saturday — Bubur Cha Cha

Simple. Honest. Comforting.

Available for delivery and dine-in.
