In the spring of 2024, London-based Musician Alabaster DePlume and I both found ourselves in the occupied West Bank, he to undergo an artist residency which would lead to the creation of “Honeycomb”, and I to create visual art on 16mm film in collaboration with a youth center in a refugee camp. While our paths never crossed in Palestine, our work converges in this piece- a project which began without a clear sense of direction for music until it found its home in the sounds Alabaster happened to be recording during the very same period, so very nearby.

Interview with EMEL by Omar Shady during her international tour, her next stop: Paris, 29th May
has established herself as a forward-thinking artist on the international scene, known for her powerful performances and strong artistic voice.
Film director sets out to look beyond the voice, beyond the stage, capturing something more intimate.

“I’ve always wondered, as a listener, I’m deeply moved by Emel’s words and emotions as a singer. But what happens when the image zooms all the way in? What lies behind that voice, those words… and who is she, beyond everything, as a human being? That question stayed with me. A curiosity that kept growing, eventually leading me on this journey, getting closer, documenting moments I had never seen or known as part of the audience.”

A journey between Egypt and the UAE, following her as she prepared for Tanweer Festival in Sharjah.

“It didn’t start with a skatepark. It started with streets, strangers, and something worth showing up for. Skateboarding in Egypt built itself from the ground up- different cities, different backgrounds, same ground. For many here, it’s never just been a sport. It’s a way to disconnect, express, and belong to something real. And it’s still growing. This June, we’re bringing that energy to Cairo International Stadium for one of the largest Go Skateboarding Day events in the MENA region. The community built this. Now watch what it becomes.”
