In my work as a poultry farmer I have met very inspiring young men and women. One of such amazing people was Amos Kennedy of Mkulima Sharp. We met on Facebook, I gave him a call, and from our first conversation we connected very well because we shared a passion for domestic birds. In less than 2 months we met in Oyugis (Amos was with his wife). Then we drove all the way to Chicken Planet Alego in Siaya. Amos had brought with him a batch of 200 3 week old Kuroiler chicks.
Along the way I learned a lot from this young couple. It was 2019. Amos had just graduated with a procurement degree. He was from Keumbu, Kisii. His wife was a trained teach from Nyeri. Later along the journey she shared that her original home was Siaya. I was more than glad to help her trace her original home, for the first time. She had her uncle's number and tracing their home wasn't a problem. She was from Gombe Komollo, opposite Gombe Komollo Primary. Now she was Nyalego, my sister. Amos was now not a business friend but an in-law.
What fascinated me about the young farmers was their level of discipline. All through the journey Amos received so many calls, but since he was driving they were taken by Nyalego. All the calls were from farmers who needed one day old chicks from different parts of Kenya and even Uganda. Her work was to take the orders, carefully check their delivery schedules, then respond with an appropriate delivery date.
I got very good quality chicks from that farm. I have been a loyal rainbowroosters farmer, but I was willing to try Kuroiler for the first time, and I have never regretted. Over the years I have seen the couple and their farm grow, I always give them referrals for orders that I cannot handle, especially those in Southern Nyanza. Today, their farm produces approximately 13,000 chicks per week. The couple now do deliveries in the whole of East Africa. They are a trusted supplier of Kari kienyeji, Kuroiler, Rainbowroosters, Sasso, Kenbro, broilers, and commercial layers. They recently opened a shop in Kisii Town where they not only do chicks and eggs, but also consultancy on livestock farming, they sell animal feeds, drugs, and farming equipment. They also have an office somewhere in Busia, am yet to visit them there.
The farm has not only introduced the couple to the Millionaires Club, but has also created employment to so many people, young and old. I admire them so much. They keep reminding me that farming pays, that every year it's the next frontier.
This year I choose to celebrate my friend
Amos Kennedy. May God continue guiding your every step. Wewe ni shujaa! Give the farm a call today on 0704441628. Get the best quality chicks!
