CONFESSION TIME.

Have you ever gone to a restaurant and started planning your escape before even ordering?

You sit down.

No one comes.

You check your phone.

No network.

You look around like a lost tourist in your own country.

At this point, even the exit door looks attractive.

šŸ˜‚

Now here is the twist.

It is not even about how long you waited.

It is about how EMPTY that wait felt.

There is a study showing that when businesses keep customers engaged while they wait, happiness, loyalty, and even spending can jump by over 25 percent.

Translation in Kenyan terms?

If you leave people bored, they will either leave or order chips and soda out of frustration.

But if you keep them engaged, they might end up ordering that ā€œlet me just tryā€ dessert.

Real example:

Restaurant A
You wait 10 minutes. No one talks to you. You are now questioning your life.

Restaurant B
You wait 10 minutes. The waiter chats with you. Suggests a drink. Tells you the kitchen is preparing something special. You are relaxed. Maybe even excited.

Same time. Different feeling.

And guess who makes more money?

Customers don’t hate waiting.

Last Friday evening.
Westlands. 8:15 PM.
Kevin walks into a nice-looking restaurant.
Good lighting. Good music. The place looks promising.
He stands at the entrance.
5 seconds…
10 seconds…
20 seconds…
Staff are moving up and down.
One waiter passes him. No eye contact.
Another one is laughing with a colleague.
Kevin checks his phone… pretends to be busy.
(You know that move šŸ˜…)
After 2 minutes, he quietly turns… and walks out.
No drama.
No complaint.
Just gone.

Now here’s the truth most restaurants don’t want to hear:

šŸ‘‰ Kevin didn’t leave because of the food.
šŸ‘‰ He left because no one saw him.

In hospitality, the first impression is not the menu.
It’s the moment a guest walks in.
A simple one:

That’s it.
5 seconds. No budget required.

It decides whether someone stays… or disappears forever.
