Japan's Tourism Agency released its quarterly Survey on Inbound Tourism Spending Trends covering April to June 2026.
The numbers revealed one of the biggest surprises of the year.
Most people would probably guess the highest-spending visitors come from the United States or nearby Asian countries.
They'd be wrong.
Mexico ranked first in spending per visitor.
The average Mexican traveler spent ¥514,925 during their trip.
That's more than double the overall visitor average of ¥244,457.
The UK ranked next among the major tourism markets, followed by Australia and the United States.
Meanwhile, the US still led total visitor spending at ¥384.8 billion because far more Americans visited Japan.
Mexico's total spending reached ¥27.9 billion, showing that while fewer Mexican tourists visit Japan, those who do tend to spend significantly more during their stay.
It's a reminder that visitor numbers don't always tell the whole story.
Sometimes, it's how much each traveler spends that makes the biggest difference.
Were you surprised that Mexican tourists now spend more per person in Japan than visitors from every other country?
