Basler Fasnacht is widely considered the world’s only major and most famous Protestant carnival.
Originating in a city that became a stronghold of the Reformation, the Basler Fasnacht diverges from Catholic tradition by starting a week later, on Monday after Ash Wednesday.
It’s known for being less about religious fasting and more about satire, politics and community cliques.
The start is called Morgestraich: At exactly 4:00 a.m. Monday, all city lights are switched off. Thousands of masked musicians (cliques) begin marching through the dark streets playing piccolos and drums, illuminated only by their hand-painted, satirical lanterns.
