On saturday, 28th of March, was an exceptional day Connected by Food!

27 participants from 14 countries signed up, and more than 500 guests attended the event. Amazing!!!

Connected by Food is getting bigger and bigger, achieving its goal of bringing people together, facilitating integration, and building a strong society based on friendship, respect, and understanding.

Our participants are very proud of their roots and love sharing their homeland's gastronomic culture with our guests. Each participant received a gift bag from our sponsors: a waffle and coffee from Hengifoss Food Truck, free entrance to the museum at the Wilderness Center to discover Icelandic culture, Hunik vinaigrette and lip balm from AusturBý, soap from Jurtadís, beer from Blábjörg, fresh bread from Fjallagrös Bakery and a drink on the house from Tehúsið. I am very thankful for their support in providing these special gifts! 🥰

This year, farmers and companies sponsored our participants with ingredients for their dishes: goat meat from Geitagott, cheese from Fjóshornið, barley and potatoes from Móðir Jörð and fish from Kalli Sveins.

Austurbrú kindly lent us tablecloths, Sauðagull provided plates, cutlery, and glasses, A4 sponsored materials for the kids' corner, and Héraðsprent printed the event illustrations. Salt and Blómaval shared their flowers and vegetables, while Marija created amazing decor downstairs. She has a unique vision for thematic decor, and I highly recommend her for making any event unforgettable. ❤️

A big thank you to Ivana, who helped me decorate with flags and prepare the space, and to Kolla and Ragnhildur for their assistance during the event.

Our band — Charles, Héctor, Mairi, Jonni, Zdenek and Lilja Sif — delighted us with international music. We ended the day dancing a traditional Moldavian dance together, enjoying the incredible energy of the music and movement. 💃🕺

Our wonderful photographer, Nives, captured the moments where guests and participants connected, exchanged stories, and enjoyed themselves❤️

Year after year, this project is possible thanks to the support of Uppbyggingarsjóður Austurlands, Múlaþing, the Icelandic Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Sláturhúsið Menningarmiðstöð. Thank you all for trust and support!

This event proved that community’s strength grows when everyone gets involved. I felt wonderful and I hope you had a great time too. I can't wait for the upcoming Christmas edition of Connected by Food!

Daria and Dorin represent Moldova at every Connected by food event due to their love for Moldovan food and the desire to present it to the whole world.

Food is the connection with our roots, it is the way to be proud of our culture and to connect with other cultures through similarities and differences.

Connected by food is the only event that encompasses a multitude of cultures and traditions, it is a family united by the same feelings of pride towards their native gastronomic culture, the desire to integrate into the new community, create new friends and a strong society around them.

It has become an extraordinary example in which people of different cultures, locals, private and state companies, farmers all come together to promote cultures and well-being in the community.

We invite you to come and taste Hrisca cu carne, prepared in Moldovan style with Icelandic goat meat from Obba and Geitagott.

All are welcome tomorrow, 28th of March at 14.00-16.00 o'clock at Sláturhúsið Menningarmiðstöð. Free entrance!

Our summer hikes to Hengifoss became much more appealing after the Hengifoss Food Truck arrived. Before that, it wasn't easy to convince my kids to make the climb! It was always too windy, too sunny, they were too tired, or there were either too many sheep—or not enough sheep! 😅

Now, we can enjoy an ice cream together at the food truck as a reward for a beautiful hike. Hengifoss has become a sweet memory, thanks to Ann-Marie’s ice cream 🥰.

Hengifoss Food Truck, owned by Sauðagull, is a proud supporter of Connected by Food this year, inviting participants to enjoy a waffle and coffee after their hike. The food truck is open daily from May to September, or even longer if the weather allows.

They offer homemade Icelandic food right by the hiking path. If you’re hungry, you can have traditional lamb soup with their own freshly baked bread. Everything is made from scratch! They even milk their own sheep to produce Iceland’s only sheep milk ice cream (by Sauðagull). They grow their own rhubarb, the waffles follow Ann-Marie’s grandmother’s recipe, and her delicious GÚDD ÍS ice cream is made using natural ingredients. Even the souvenirs are made from their own wool or by local crafters.
Don’t hesitate to treat yourself in these peaceful surroundings before or after enjoying the stunning beauty of one of Iceland’s highest waterfalls!

Erika Andra is a conscientious participant of Connected by food. She loves her country Romania and its culinary traditions so much that she never misses the opportunity to present them to the whole world.

This time, Erika will share the soul stories behind the Eggplant Salad. It is the salad that if you have it in the fridge, you will wake up at midnight to eat a little more 😅

We are very curious to taste your salad, Erika! ❤️

Takk, Sæunn og AusturBý, fyrir að vera samstarfsaðili Connected by Food! ❤️

***

I first heard about Sæunn and AusturBý at a market where I tasted her honey. It was delicate and delicious—but unfortunately for me, it sold out before I could buy any! 🙄

Luckily, I managed to snag the very last lip balm, made with Icelandic beeswax, shea butter, jojoba oil, and Vitamin E. It has saved my dry lips many times since!

For the participants of Connected by Food, Sæunn has prepared some special gifts: the lip balm I mentioned above 🥰 and her Hunik vinaigrette, which is perfect for salads and even drinks. That contains Icelandic honey, heather honey from Fagurhólsmýri and apple cider vinegar (with mother). I’m so excited to try a salad with Hunik! ❤️

Thank you, Sæunn and AusturBý, for being a partner of Connected by Food! ❤️

Eva represents Spain for the first time, while Lidia is participating for the third time at Connected by Food ❤️

They are preparing Torrija and looking forward to sharing a bite with you on Saturday, March 28th, from 14:00 to 16:00 at Sláturhúsið.

"The Easter torrija tradition is pretty straightforward: you use yesterday’s bread, soak it in milk with cinnamon and lemon, dip it in egg, and fry it. What makes it meaningful is doing it together - everyone squeezed into the kitchen, each person taking a small task while the house fills with that sweet smell. It turns a simple recipe into a shared moment that families repeat year after year," says Lidia, reflecting on her memories.

It's great to have you with us, girls! We are excited to taste your Torrija! 🥰
