6.Momo is a type of steamed bun with some form of filling. Momo has become a traditional delicacy in Nepal, Tibet and among Nepalese/Tibetan communities in Bhutan, Sikkim and Darjeeling district. It is one of the most popular fast foods in Nepal. Momos have also spread to other countries like USA (some parts) and UK and India.

Basically, there are two types of momo, steamed and fried. Momo is usually served with a dipping sauce (chutney/acchar), normally made with tomato as the base ingredient. Soup momo is a dish with steamed momo immersed in a meat broth. Pan-fried momo is also known as kothey momo. Steamed momo served in hot sauce is called C-momo. There are also a variety of Tibetan momos, including tingmo and thaipo.

4. SAMOSAS AND PAKODAS
Again, an Indian specialty from the streets. Samosas are deep fried pastries with a savoury filling made from potatoes and spices. In some places in the country, you can treat yourself to versions filled with minced meat too.
Pakoras or pakodas, are the ultimate rain food and known to originate from Uttar Pradesh. They’re found in versions of potatoes, onions, big green chillies, bread or spinach leaves dipped in a lightly seasoned and spiced gram-flour batter and deep fried. Yes, there is a lot of deep frying in monsoon friendly Indian dishes.

3. STUFFED PARATHAS
It’s a flat bread with a choice of stuffing like spiced mashed potatoes or cauliflower and coriander leaves. I’ve had the best Parathas or Pronthas in North India. And for meat eaters, the parathas can also be made with a kheema (savoury minced meat) filling. It’s served with yoghurt or Indian pickle.

2. MISAL PAV
It’s a fiery dish served all over Maharashtra and wakes up the locals on a lazy rainy day. It consists of a hot chilly based curry and sprouts of Mataki. Misal, which is also known as Usal (a thicker version than the liquid curry) is served with pav and condiments that include chopped red onions, hot green chillies, lime wedges and coriander leaves.
Because of its fiery kick, I call it ‘Missile Pav’.

RAINY SEASON FOOD FAVOURITES AND WHERE TO GET THEM.

It’s finally raining in Pune or looks like the monsoons have properly arrived after a long spell. With the rain, comes an appetite for rainy season snacks and food and there is nothing like sipping a hot masala chai and snacking on some hot bhajiyas in the rainy weather.

Bhajiyas & Pakoras

One of the top symptoms of cloudy skies and rainy weather is the immediate craving for some piping hot bhajiyas or pakoras! I know it’s not just me but millions of others that link the perfect monsoon evening or afternoon to a cup of chai and a platter or bhajiyas whether they’re onion, eggplant, palak, mirchi, paneer, capsicum or other crisp batter fried veggies. Fortunately, Pune comes with a number of great eat out locations to head out to and enjoy hot bhajiyas on a monsoon day. Our top picks are: - Sinhagad Fort -maybe it’s the view, the altitude or just having something hot when you’re cold but bhajiyas here are unbeatable - Karachi Sweet Mart -They have many branches around the city but if you don’t have one in your area, head to MG Road - Diwadkars – Legendary for their wada pavs, with their perfection when it comes to batter, the bhajiyas served here are just super. You can find a branch at Parihar Chowk, Aundh. - Mahalaxmi Bhajiya Center – Right in the heart of Bhavani Peth, this place is famous for Bhajiyas and has a crowd all day.

Bhutta or Charcoal Roasted Corn

Another monsoon food favorite that’s good all year around but just becomes something different in cool rainy weather. Roasting hot bhutta, a generous helping of lime, salt and mirchi powder…just magic! Bhutta wallah’s often move around the city and easier to find during the monsoon through most parts of Pune thankfully. For a slightly more memorable experience though, the ones you can find on long drives to Panshet and other outskirts of the city along the side the highway make a perfect pit stop

Momos

Rapidly increasing in popularity, nothing hits the spot like a plate for fresh steamed momos with a well seasoned filling laced with ginger, garlic, onions and spices. Perfect monsoon food, momo cards have become big business with several chains and brands like monsoon momos having set up outlets in most of the cities malls. Places in Pune you can enjoy a great plate of momos?: - Momo stand in Lane 6 Koregaon Park – This independent guy will have swarms of people crowded around his cart on a rainy evening and that’s just a testimony of how good they are - Mainland China – At the end of Boat Club Road, this is more a fine dining experience than street food but their range of dumplings and momos are exquisite - Monsoon Momos – chain of cart vendors found in most malls including SGS Mall on MG Road, Dorabjees Supermarket MG Road and Viman Nagar etc - Himalaya Momo – Viman Nagar. Another independent vendor that is really making waves - The Momo’s –

Located in Aundh DP Road, this is well worth a try

Grilled Sandwiches

Sandwiches are good all year round but a hot toasty grilled sandwich with melted cheese, chutney, tomatoes or any other filling are monsoon food! A large number of sandwich carts, café’s and even larger restaurants have made their mark on the grilled sandwich and some of these are: - A1 Sandwich cart- Either located in lane 4 or lane 6 of Koregaon Park, this is a top choice for many. If you want to know what all the hype is about..ask him for the chocolate sandwich. - Poona Coffee House – In Camp serves a really delicious grilled sandwich - Marz O rin – MG Road’s top hangout for foodies can whip you up a great grilled sandwich any day and any time

Vada Pavs & Samosas

We can’t complete this list being in Pune and not have the iconic vada pav feature on our list so here it is! Samosas are another hot favorite in the rains and the choice of places serving a good samosa is just too vast to list out but nearly everyone has their favorites. Some of the top places to go out and grab a vada pav (although any place is the right place when you crave one) are: - Singhad Fort – Once again, the view, the weather and hot crispy batter…unbeatable - Diwadkars – Located at Parihar Chowk Aundh. These are the guys that make the Karjat vada pav…what many critics would say is vada pav perfection. - JJ Garden Vada Pav- Camp, Pune has become a long standing hit among Puneites - Joshi Vadewale – A Pune chain of vada pav outlets which have been a brand for setting standards. The outlet in Wakkad is a must visit. - Goli Vada Pav- which is a newer entrant and quickly becoming the McDonalds of vada pav locally To end this amazing menu with, all you need is a hot cup of masala chai and there you have it!..the perfect monsoon day!

VADA PAV, the tangy, tasty India’s own burger is a delicious snack of bread with fried potato and chutney. This most loved street snack of the Puneites and the Mumbaikers has some political significance too, much to our surprise. It is said that the political party Shiv Sena worked hard on pushing this dish to deal with the influx of South Indian restaurants in Maharashtra. So vada pav stalls were started outside the factories so that workmen could have this local and inexpensive delicacy without looking for any alternatives. Best inexpensive option for the students coming from outside the state and the office goers, Vada pav when served with hot and spicy garlic chutney can replace a meal all together, especially when you are running out of money.

Here is a guide to the Best places for Vada Pav in Pune

-Priyadarshan Snacks

Located between Marathwada College and BMCC Colleg, it ensures its popularity among collegians. Served with green chutney and chilies vada pav is simply awesome here. Other than vada pav they also have fried bread patties, sabudana khichdi and kanda poha, all prepared with lots of green chilies. Do not forget to taste the sweet elaichi chai or cardamom tea which can be your perfect accompaniment to all the dishes.

-JJ or the Garden Vada Pav Stall

Located behind Clover center near Aurora Towers, this is one of the most famous vada pav outlets in Pune. Started in 1972 the quality of the vada pav has been retained for decades. The USP is the hot green chutney smeared between the vada and the pav. The dish is prepared with ginger, garlic and chilies that add a delicious flavor to the spicy vada served hot with fried green chilies. Pleasant service and the hygienic manner is the plus point.
Shivshakti Vada Pav Stall
Shivshakti vada pav is stalled at Range Hills opposite Ganpati temple. The speciality is that the inside of the pav or bread is smeared with green chutney, coriander and sliced onions. Other delicacies you can have here include samosas and bhajias that are tasty and very popular among IT professionals and the nearby factory workers.

-Joshi Vade Wale

The outlets of Joshi vade wale are located at almost every corner of Pune. But a stall worth mentioning will be the Indira College of Management near Wakad. As it is located at the outskirts of Pune, people love to go there for a long drive especially on rainy days. It is also a common stop for travelling to Mumbai. Vada pav is served with fried chilies and garlic chutney. Other items found here are sabudana khichdi, pohe, misal pav along with Maharashtrian breakfast items like thalipeeth with tea, coffee and juices.

-Sainath Wada Pao Centre

As the name suggest the place is a big hit for its wada pao. Located close to the Wadia College on the road that goes towards Koregaon Park and St. Miras, Sainath has been a popular hangout for years. It’s a favorite hangout place for college students. Sainath is known for serving some of the best snack items at incredibly low prices. Other than vada pav, Sainath also serves fried food items made from batata (potato), besan and pao (bread). But the taste of the vada pav is best and sells the most. Stalls open at 6 am in the morning for serving the college students and the office professionals.
