🐔🥚 Why Do Some Hens Lay Shell-less Eggs? Let’s Solve the Mystery! 🥚🐔
Ever picked up an egg only to find it soft and transparent, instead of having a hard shell? 🤔 While it might seem odd, shell-less eggs are very common issue in poultry. So what’s causing them?
🔍 Possible Causes:
🦴 Calcium Deficiency: Eggshells are 90% calcium! If a hen does not consume enough calcium, the shell will likely not form properly.
☀️ Vitamin D3 Deficiency: Chickens need vitamin D3 to absorb calcium. Less sunlight (especially in winter) will yield shell-less eggs.
🐔 Shell Gland Issues: If this gland isn’t working properly, eggs may be laid before the shell is fully formed.
😨 Stress & Age: Loud noises, predators, and even routine disruptions can lead to thin-shelled or shell-less eggs.
🦠Diseases: Diseases like avian flu, Newcastle disease, and infectious bronchitis can interfere with eggshell formation.
🔥 Heat & Hormonal Changes: High temps (32°C+), molting, and premature laying can all affect shell development.
How to Prevent Shell-less Eggs?
✔️ Feed a calcium-rich diet (oyster shells, limestone, supplements)
✔️ Ensure hens get enough vitamin D3 (sunshine or enriched feed)
✔️ Keep stress levels low: happy hens = better eggs!
✔️ Maintain flock health & prevent diseases
✔️ Control temperature and lighting for optimal egg production
💡 Fun Fact: While shell-less eggs aren’t ideal, they’re still safe to eat; just be sure to consume them quickly since they lack a protective shell!
