Coffee from Papua New Guinea (PNG) is unique and highly valued among specialty coffee enthusiasts.
The Eastern Highlands of Papua New Guinea is one of the country’s premier coffee-growing regions and plays a central role in the origin story of PNG coffee.
Coffee was first planted here in the 1920s by Lutheran missionaries using Arabica seeds brought from Jamaica’s Blue Mountains—varieties known for their smooth, mild flavor and complex aromas. The region’s high altitude, ranging between 1,300 and 1,800 meters above sea level, combined with rich volcanic soil and abundant rainfall, creates ideal conditions for cultivating high-quality Arabica beans.
Goroka, the provincial capital, has long been a hub for coffee processing and trade, with many notable estates and cooperatives based in and around the town. Smallholder farmers dominate production in the Eastern Highlands, often growing coffee on family-owned plots alongside subsistence crops. Most of the coffee is traditionally wet-processed, which enhances clarity and brightness in the cup.
Beans from this region are known for their vibrant acidity, medium to full body, and distinctive flavor notes that can include citrus, tropical fruit, cocoa, and floral undertones. The Eastern Highlands has earned a reputation in the specialty coffee world for producing some of PNG’s most balanced and complex coffees, and efforts to improve traceability and processing standards have only increased international demand for beans from this unique highland area.
