The other day, me and April had the opportunity to visit Dollywood, Dolly Parton’s theme park in Tennessee.

It was fascinating learning more about Dolly’s story growing up as one of 12 children in the Great Smoky Mountains, in a family that had very little, before going on to become one of the most successful and recognisable entertainers in the world.

One story that really stuck with me was about the doctor who brought Dolly into the world. Her family were so poor that her dad reportedly paid the doctor with a sack of cornmeal. Years later, Dolly had a chapel at Dollywood named in honour of that same doctor. Dr Robert F. Thomas.

That really summed up so much of what we learnt about her. No matter how successful she became, she never seemed to forget where she came from or the people and community that helped shape her.

She invested so much back into her local area, creating jobs, bringing tourism to the Smoky Mountains and supporting generations of families through her charitable work.

Having only just visited Dollywood and learnt all of this makes it even sadder to hear about her passing.

A remarkable legacy and a wonderful example of using success to give something back. ❤️

Rest in peace, Dolly. 🕊️

🐟 A brilliant day at Billingsgate Fish Market!

Today, Thea and Ana travelled to London to visit the iconic Billingsgate Fish Market as part of a Young Fish Fryers event.

They had the opportunity to explore the market and learn more about the incredible variety of fish and seafood available, before getting hands on with a fish filleting session led by CJ Jackson, learning how to prepare and fillet a range of different species. 🔪🐟

It’s fantastic to give our young team members opportunities like this getting out of the shop, learning directly from people within the industry and building their knowledge of the product we serve every day.

A huge thank you to everyone involved in organising especially James from the day and for supporting the next generation of fish fryers! 👏

THE UK DROUGHT & OUR POTATOES!

You’ve probably noticed just how dry the countryside is looking at the moment and the current drought is having a very real impact on British agriculture.

As of 10 August, around 71% of England is officially in drought, affecting approximately 45 million people. England and Wales have also just experienced their driest July in around 190 years, with parts of the South East receiving just 1% of their expected rainfall.

For farmers, conditions like these are incredibly challenging. Potatoes need a reliable supply of water while they’re growing, and prolonged hot, dry weather means crops can struggle to develop properly. Earlier Environment Agency figures were already showing record soil moisture deficits across several parts of England, alongside restrictions on agricultural water abstraction.

Unfortunately, this is now having a knock on effect on the potato market.

The availability and cost of potatoes are being affected, and we’re being warned to expect significant increases in the price we pay for our potatoes.

I’m currently working closely with our suppliers to understand exactly what those increases are likely to look like over the next couple of weeks. Once I have a clearer picture, I’ll be able to assess what impact, if any, this will have on us going forward.

As always, we’ll do everything we can to manage increases sensibly while continuing to use the quality potatoes our customers expect.

It’s another reminder that the price of fish & chips isn’t just determined by what happens inside the shop what happens in British fields matters too.

🐟 A brilliant opportunity for the next generation of fish friers!

Tomorrow, the National Federation of Fish Friers (NFFF) Federation of Fish Friers is hosting a special event for young people working within the fish & chip industry, including a behind the scenes tour of the iconic Billingsgate Fish Market.

Today, our very own Thea and Ana headed down to London ready for an early start tomorrow!

But before the fishy business begins, they had the chance to experience something completely different. Thanks to April, they were treated to a behind the scenes look at some of the UK’s biggest radio brands, including Heart and Capital FM. 🎙️📻

We’re really passionate about giving our young team opportunities to learn, experience new things and see where hard work can take them both within our industry and beyond.

Tomorrow it’s back to fish, with what should be a fantastic and educational morning at Billingsgate! 🐟🇬🇧

Fish & Chips – a great source of protein

Fish and chips might be one of Britain’s favourite takeaway meals, but there’s more to it than just great taste.

Fish is naturally rich in high quality protein, which contributes to the maintenance and growth of muscle mass and plays an important role as part of a healthy, balanced diet.

For example, a typical 6oz portion of fish can provide around 30g or more of protein, depending on the species you choose.

We’re passionate about showing that fish & chips can be more than an occasional treat. With quality fish at the heart of the meal, it can provide a substantial source of protein while still offering the convenience and enjoyment of a traditional takeaway.

There’s more to fish & chips than you might think.
